I'll kick this off by introducing myself. I'm Caroline, the community manager for the Meraki Community. I'm really excited to help this community get off the ground!

When I'm not community-managing, I hang out with my two small kiddos, ride my bike around San Francisco, and get up to the mountains as much as possible.

Hi, I'm Erik, CEO of a small nonprofit agency in Kansas.  Having started this project from the ground up myself in 2004 as a "locel" project has taken me by storm, growing into a nationwide organization this past 2 years.  I provide publicly displaced persons, primarily mentally ill and homeless persons/families crisis intervention of some king, all dependent on each individual situation.  I do this because I love people.  I love helping the less fortunate than myself.

I am also retired after a 25 year career with AT&T as one of the executive assistants to the AT&T Kansas President.  Therefore I have a big interest in the success of international telecommunication companies and remain fascinated by the ever evolving technology.

Having said that, and having also been a Cisco customer for 20 years, when the Meraki/Cisco project launched, I must say that I have gotten a bit addicted to learning the cloud structuring of communications - all of which you all do an excellent job at.  I like Meraki because you are a no nonsense, more plug and play system - meaning that you are user friendly, and you can still give quality customer services at a very medium price point.

Actually as well, I am getting ready to transition my agency from a traditional VOIP carrier to the Meraki/Cisco project after I learn what you all do and how you do it - how to optimize a custom system for my agency.  If there are any Meraki/Cisco experts/managers out there that have worked with small nonprofits/smaller public service agencies, that you private message me on here - I would love to get some final opinions before launching Meraki - especially those knowledgeable on the Meraki/Cisco hardware setup.  The hardware is ming boggling to me and I am truly having a hard time sorting out what does what because the entire hardware lineup is so multifunctional.  So please email/message me on here - I need some final input here.  If any reader here handles the State of Kansas where I am I would like to speak with you to at least get the ball rolling.  I am thinking at this point of starting out with your free trial.  I am also taking recommendations on carriers that provide services that work in sync with Meraki products.  If I have it right, I guess there are many 3 party VOIP/internet providers that can power your systems.

Have a wonderful week and I look forward to all of your replies.

Peace,

Erik

Hellow Everyone

My name is PJ and I am new to the community.

I joined the community in the hope that someone could point me in the right direction to setup my newly purchased mx84 security appliance.

When I connect to the management port on the MX84 and open a web browser,it give me an error message saying that "something's is not right

this security appliance is trying to join a network or find a working Ethernet connection"

I have the internet port 1 connected to my gateway router and the lan port3 connected to my Lan core switch.

I have also found that the Lan ports 3-12 on the mearaki appliance are on the 192,168.0.0/24 subnet however my LAN is on the 192.168.18.0/24 subnet.

Any advise would be much appreciated.

Hi everybody I'm Tyler West.  I'm probably a bit of an oddity in this group but I like it that way.  I have been in the industry for a while and have specifically been a network engineer at one level or another for over 20 years.  I grew up as a beef cattle farmer in a small town in KY and by some miracle got exposed to computers at an early age.  My first experience was on a Tandy Model III which pretty well gives some of you an idea of how old I am.  Besides the network engineering I'm quite an experienced Linux/BSD hack, love my Mac, and have no small amount of disdain for Windows.  Of course I have achieved my CMNA but I am also a CCNP, CCDP, and CCNA Wireless as well as Aruba ACMP (Keep the boos and hisses to a minimum please.  It was forced upon me).  I did pass my CCIE written not long ago and sat for my lab in RTP but that didn't go so well.  As we would say in the south that lab is made for a bunch of 20 and 30-something young whippersnappers.  My brain is wise and experienced but just not that fast anymore.

Aside from all that I have a wonderful wife and a son who is a 3rd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do as well as two extremely spoiled dogs.  I am a huge music fanatic and work when I can as an amateur sound engineer.

MTF on that if asked.  We are a reseller but presales - post sales and installing this gear really separates the "Marketing Claims" from the "No kidding - this is what it does and does not do"

Finally, have a customer that is using MXs MRs  and MSs throughout the network.  Pretty large and am learning some of the great things Meraki brings to the table first hand and also some of the shortcomings.

Here to help and learn - will not blow smoke.  Seen that too much.

@Jack

Thanks for sharing - that is an awesome kit.  I'm guessing these units are under a single license pool so there isn't an on-boarding process to register new licenses; you can go right to testing, service restoration, etc. Curious if you have any best practices to share to assure the loan process - such as storage of the kit to make sure everything is operational ready,  asset tracking.

I work for Telaid, a services company that supports customers operating their own Meraki networks. We provide field services so this is interesting to me.

Thanks - J

Hi Jasjones415,

You are right. I create this emergency kit on its own organization and its mostly configured ready to go. Most of our smaller managed site offices does not have or cannot afford redundancy equipment. If 1 equipment fail we can quickly deploy a loaner to keep the site up and running ASAP so that we have some time dealing with RMA / replacement.  Few weeks ago a contractor accidentally cut a copper phone line while digging the road on one of our property and it will takes few days for the copper line to be repair by the phone company. We immediately deploy our MC phones and forward all call  from the site phone number to the MC number  and they are up and running within hours. The site are so happy with the fancy touch screen  Meraki MC phones they end up converting their old legacy phone system to Meraki MC.

I've made some comments/suggestions via the portal and have never really heard anything back so maybe this is the ideal place to discuss where i see improvements can be made.

As a managed service provider the reporting function from Meraki is fantastic... although skewed and sometimes difficult to extrapolate.  What i'd really like to see is a report that provides downtime of AP's or a what AP's are of a concern either by too many clients attached or excessive throughput etc... (this is where someone tells me its possible)

I've been working with Meraki products shortly after they introduced the Indoor and Outdoor (OD2) pro products. While more expensive than other wireless deployments at the time, our hotel deployments were absolutely thrilled with the reliability of the products and the wifi. Even when an AP or gateway failed, the only way we even knew was because the dashboard told us so--the site never knew of the failure.

The Meraki products were one of a kind at one point, but now the competition has caught up to a certain extent. I still recommend the Indoor and Outdoor products to smaller networks that need more management than bandwidth.

Little known fact--the Outdoor OD2s can use a wired backhaul when they are the only devices on a LAN and their mesh will be based on the wired link vs the wireless one. Bandwidth via this wired backhaul was limited to 11Mbps, even with 100Mbps switches, but was better than a purely wireless mesh.

Good afternoon one and all ..

I'm a principal within nedwos and we help SME's with all of the "back office" type work in a complete managed way. eg all their IT, comms, software etc along with processing accounts, paperwork, monthly accounts and such.

All this is tied-up with best-of-breed technology that most SME's don't know about or cannot access because of licence counts/fees because they are too "expensive" for the bigger service providers to support. We are the middle-men, and provide exceptional first-line support for our clients, building upon the experience of all our clients.

This allows SME's access to the best enterprise security, data protection, voice/voip comms, workflow automation, marketing and systems.

We ARE your office, allowing you time to do your business.

I'm a huge fan of the Meraki gear and have deployed Meraki at a few client sites over the last year.

Got on the Meraki in a way of a special use case scenario.

Had a need to run a VPN tunnel to a PC and a few PoE cameras at multiple remote sites behind customer router/firewall and with minimal intervention.

Each site was identical, so templates were used.

The Z1 teleworker appliances were great for the above purpose.

Even did a deployment of the MC Phones, they are pretty slick!

Only thing I have not touched yet are the security cameras.

Hi there!

I'm Tyler Fisher, CIO at Gordon Memorial Health Services.  We run all Meraki with the exception of our core switches (which we'll replace with Meraki soon) and our phone system.

I actually wrote a little blog post a while back about our experience with Meraki, you can read it here if you're into that kind of thing.

Can't wait to "network" (yep, pun intended) with you all Smiley Wink

I'm so happy to have received the email about the Community page!  This is something I was asking about from the first when we decided to deploy Meraki.  We're a fashion company with about 70 retail locations.  Installing Meraki has been an absolute life saver as we get into the holiday season!

My name is Craig and I am the Technology Director at Randolph School District, Wisconsin. I oversee and manage all things technology, wired and wireless infrastructure, classroom technology, building technology, phones, access control, printing, teacher/student/administration devices. Basically, if it plugs into a wall outlet or a network jack, I get called. We have a Meraki Wireless system and love it.

Greetings,

My name is Kurt and I am a Systems and Network Administrator for the Yuma District Hospital in eastern Colorado. We are a 12 bed rural hospitl and associated clinic with an IT staff of 3. Our responsibilities include everything low voltage, hardware support and software support.

We finished a transition to Meraki switches in June from Cisco switches. I am enjoying learning about the Meraki system and the comparative ease to Cisco for programming. The web interface is such a change from what I am used to.

I am excited to share knowledge with other folks here in the community.
