Switching from Manual to Named Tag

We are looking to switch from manual device tags to named target groups on system manager. it is possible to do this without the apps being removed from the device and needing to be redeployed?

If you setup the user tags first and scope all of the app's before removing the device tags you should be OK.

I would test with a random not hugely important app first.
