Hello Meraki Education Customers,    We're really curious what software you use that integrates with Meraki.   Most importantly, we want to know what Student Information System (SIS) you use, but we also want to know what else you have integrated with Meraki (Active Directory, web filters, reporting systems that ingest our CSV files, etc.). It would also be really helpful to understand the scope of your deployment, that is, how many students and networks do you manage.   If you are not comfortable sharing this information publicly, but want to participate, please send me a direct message here on the forum.   Appreciate your help. This type of informal survey is not scientific, but does give us a better understanding of our customer base as we improve SM.   Thanks,   Noah Salzman Product Manager for Meraki SM  ... View more

Hey Bradh1,   For general background, the iOS app is built by a different team than the SM team. But I'll talk to them about the bug you ran into and the feature difference you saw in v4.    And -- said with a smile -- suggesting you might move to competitor when you already use our product for free isn't the best bargaining tactic if you are trying to get me motivated.  😉   Cheers,   Noah Salzman Product Manager for SM     ... Not sure if you were "in the biz" for PowerPC->Intel but they did a fairly decent job at that transition. Of course, not sure how many Apple engineers are still around from that time.   With regard to MAC randomization: vendors like Cisco/Meraki will find ways to deal with it over time and it improves privacy for individual iPhone owners. So, in the long run I think it is positive, but yes, we are in a crappy middle-period where products like ours have to catch up to the reality that MAC can't be used anymore. ... View more

Hi SM Admins,   We've introduced a new document which lists the platforms that SM supports. Up until now we have not documented this list other than obscure places like the marketing data sheet for SM. The new document is here:   https://documentation.meraki.com/SM/Other_Topics/Supported_Operating_Systems_with_Meraki_SM   Our goal with SM is to create better and deeper support for new capabilities in iOS, Android, macOS, Windows and ChromeOS. This means, in turn, that we need to demote some of the older versions of those OSes into a "best effort" category.    "Best effort" is a transitional category where SM still works and you can still call Meraki Support. However, unlike the officially supported list there may be cases where we will not be able to fix a bug or implement a new feature for that older platform. The Support team also has fewer resources available on those platforms to reproduce complex issues in-house. Finally, any OS in the "best effort" list should be signal to you that the "clock is ticking" and you should consider plans on how to upgrade the devices in question or migrate to newer hardware.   Managing a product like SM is always a balance, we strive to support a wide set of platforms, but we also are eager to innovate at a faster pace. A "long tail" of old OSes is a headwind to innovation.  The platforms that have been demoted off of the official list are generally used on a small percentage of SM devices so we hope the impact is minimal and that you will benefit from this change in the long run.   Noah Salzman Product Manager for Meraki SM ... Since I got all high-n-mighty about open communication just hours ago: when support says "it's in development" that doesn't necessarily mean there is a developer actively working on it. It means "support agrees with you that this is a real issue that needs development to fix it; we have sent the case to development; and it's now up to development to do something about it."    This particular issue is not currently being worked on by a developer.   However, I'm currently having discussions internally about this issue… The product management team is still gathering info both from customers and our product leaders on the best approach to make things better. Once we have details we will share them, but this one might take some time. ... View more

Hey Vassallon,    I understand you are mad, you have good reason to be. However, if you find it useful for the SM team to engage openly on issues like this, and not get corporate boilerplate answers, you need to understand that we are people capable of making mistakes who care about making a product that helps you.   As Kevin outlined a few days back, one part of the fix has been delivered and more are coming. It's never as fast as we would like, but we will get there.   As I stated above: we didn't communicate the change because we didn't think that change needed to be broadcast.  To your point, we do engage with users and ask how they use the product but we can't do it for every change. The key error was completely failing to recognize an existing workflow you and others rely on. Had we recognized the impact we would have treated it differently. That lack of recognition was the issue; not some casual disrespect and dismissal of the potential impact.   I ask for your continued patience as we fix this. I will understand if that is too much to ask but please know one of the worst feelings for us is knowing that our product is making your work day more difficult rather than making it easier.    Sincerely,     --Noah--       ... "Never take down a fence unless you know why it was put up in the first place."   First, please accept our apology for the hassle and annoyance. Our intention is never to make someone's job harder.   To emphasize what Kevin already wrote: the negative impact of this change was unintentional and we are working right now to get you the features you need to have a reasonable workflow. The upcoming changes will not give you exactly the same workflow. Why? The starting point for this mishegoss was a desire to solve issues many of our users were having with deleted devices in the DEP device list… the "fence" in the aphorism above. So, rather than a simple revert, we will be creating a new workflow around DEP devices. That work is underway now. It will be weeks, not months, to complete it.   Without question, this event has caused us to reflect seriously on this type of change and how we can do better to understand the impact of these types of changes. This was a big swing and a miss, we get that.    Later this week we'll share a rough sketch of the changes that are coming to get your feedback and ensure we are on the right track to fixing this.   Noah Salzman Product Manager for Meraki SM ...
