Hi there. I have two access points that regularly come up and down due to various reasons (they’re on finite power sources in a rural area) and we turn them on and off. I want to get notifications in general about MRs on this network just not these two. Daily email I don’t care about. Can I disable emails for just two MRs using a tag or something?

Hello! I know this is not suggested, but I am doing a residential installation where my client is going to just have one VLAN set to VLAN 1. In the SSID settings, there is a dropdown for "Use VLAN Tagging". I have another installation where that dropdown is simply set to "Dont use VLAN tagging" and everything works fine. Again, one VLAN set to VLAN 1. My question is - is it functionally equivalent to say "Dont use VLAN Tagging" or "Use VLAN Tagging" and then set it to 1?

Hello! My friend has one of those Verizon range extenders that plugs into your internet and gives you a little microcell situation at home. We are switching his old router out and a MX68 comes tomorrow. I think I did this right I just want to confirm. Here is the doc that Verizon offers that tells you how to configure it. @PhilipDAth I get the first part. I wasnt sure what local LAN meant in this case but now I do. Cool. In terms of the second part, I dont know what the context is. I just have a Meraki DHCP network where my guests go. They cant see LAN traffic like servers etc. Can you help me get that second part? Obviously I understand that under a normal VLAN this works no problem.

@PhilipDAth @Follow up question (you were right the WiFi calling worked) Apple FaceTime is LAN aware so if you use it locally and the router can, it will give you a local connection instead of going out to the net and back. Is the same true of two Meraki DHCP users on the same MX? Like two users on a guest network? Or would that need to be a VLAN?

I have a guest network set to Meraki DHCP with a splash page and no password. Should Wifi calling work on this? My phone seems to think not. Is there something I can modify to allow it or do I need to make it a real vlan based guest network?

@KarstenI in your opinion, whats the most likely threat posed at this point? I wont have enough to make a bot net to be DDOS'd inside my network, and everybody here uses Macs and iOS which is pretty solid as far a I understand in terms of attack surface. And then I have advanced security on my MX68.

Hey all So I have a few IoT devices coming on - water level sensors, temp sensors, things like that that my facilities guys need to be able to access. My main VLAN contains about 20-30 devices, all mac or iOS. I have a couple synology servers which are as secure as they can be in terms of all best practices followed. I guess Im wondering if i should be at all worried about somebody somehow getting access to the IoT stuff. Id love to have it be easy for my guys to check all their sensors and things without having to jump on another SSID/VLAN combo. Is there something else you can do to somehow mitigate the chance that a device could be compromised? Most of them seem based on Espressif hw/sw solutions. They seem pretty legit. Anyways your thoughts welcome.

Apples new Private Relay technology looks good and one of the things they say you can do is block it on your network if you want. Brings up an interesting question - how do you block clients from accessing certain IPs or DNS lookup? My sense is maybe you can do it by VLAN or group policy? Is that how? Using cloudflare DNS servers. Ok hip me up.

Excellent advice, thank you. The 52, if I’m hearing you correctly, could work better in a situation where it’s between two areas and both of them are somewhat difficult to reach and so you’ve got to spatial streams available for each one basically. Like if the access point has to go in different directions to connect to clients the more potential streams the better.

My friends - Is there likely to be any difference in terms of range or signal penetration through walls? I have a number of spaces where it would be handy to only use one access point and so if it means using a slightly bigger one I’m fine with it. Right now I have a space I’m thinking of with a 42 with an adjacent room that’s currently spotty and I’m not sure it would reach if I use the 52 but curious. Is there a technical difference?
