Thanks, I usually do that. They make the reschedule easy to find, but the cancel options wasn't so obvious first time I dealt with this. I'd like to be able to opt out of that anything automatic, as I'm regularly looking for updates and evaluating.

I have the same concern, as I'm working with my company to develop a change management process. I get these once in a while, but I'm always (so far) able to reschedule them. I can't imagine Cisco would ever force an update, but they don't really make it very clear how it can be cancelled. It would be nice to be able to opt out of these, but I'm not aware of an ability to do that.

They are all MS220-8P and the only ones I have. They are older and we've had some issues like this with them before. I've got 5 stacks of MS355s, each with 6 to 8 switches, which updated smoothly.

The upgrade was pretty smooth for me overall. I updated a total of 43 switches for this site, models include MS425, MS355, MS120, MS220. Everything worked great (including one MS120) except for three MS220s I have, which basically all needed a factory reset and two of those needed to be goosed by support. I'm not sure the overall fix I was looking for is there, but I'll have to do some internal testing to verify. I did not have the PoE issues others were wanting to address, so I can't speak to those. It's pretty stable, so I'll roll it to other sites soon.

What is doing routing between the two VLANs? (is the switch L3, have an MX or non-Meraki device?) You can create those VLANs and filter traffic with the switch ACL or Group Policy, but it would be important to know what is doing the routing.

I'll know Saturday night, as I'm pushing MS 16.8 to a good size site with MS425, MS355 and MS120 switches. I'll report here. 16.8 addresses a specific issue I'm having with LACP links. When I would reboot a stack in an IDF or even interrupt the trunk to our security appliance stack the core switches would go orange for 10 to 15 minutes.

There are things you can do to address throughput. I would expect that losing connectivity to storage altogether (and any outage, nuisance or damage that may bring) is a bigger issue. I'd be curious to know how much throughput you'd lose. It's the same switches. Did they tell you about the drawback to the stack in the design, or was that an oversight?

What kind of resources are these VMs connecting to in Azure? This sounds more like an issue with those VMs recovering and not the VMWare cluster (that's what I thought you were talking about). I think I'd need to know the full relationship with those machines. If this is a system level dependency like a connection to a storage volume, I can see why you would have this issue. System level dependencies may have problems with any switch reboot, but it sounds like maybe you have a situation where a redundant pair would handle this better than a stack because there is always a necessary connection maintained. Whether it is a system dependency or just a highly sensitive network connectivity requirement, I'd see this as more of a "what's best for your environment" thing than an issue of best practice.

What exactly happens to the VMWare hosts when you update the firmware on the stack? The whole stack will reboot, so the servers would be unavailable anyway. Is there some issue with them recovering afterward? I have a similar setup with an MS425 stack and 4-node VMWare cluster and do not have issues when updating switch firmware.

What specifically are you looking for? PRTG has a free license for up to 100 sensors. It has sensors for device health (CPU, memory, etc) and also supports SNMP sensors for port-level utilization, errors, etc. NetFlow is also supported. Their paid offering is worth it as well.

In my case, OSPF would have been only to redistribute into BGP for my Cat93K pair and an ExpressRoute circuit (requiring BGP). That's why I bought Cat93K-Y switches. I needed a network core that could participate in BGP. A Meraki engineer who helped me verify my configuration said native BGP was coming to the MX eventually. I'm sticking with Cat93K at core and edge for now, so I have access to the protocols, etc I need. I love Meraki, but I'm running MS switches as access layer devices.

I run a pair of Cat93K-Y switches in our data center core and decided not to put them into the Meraki dashboard. I'm still not clear on what I'd lose. The design looks good to me. I have a similar situation, as the MX250 pair we have was doing all routing for the site. I was going to use OSPF, but elected not to because there were limitations on the MX. I don't know if these are still there (It's been a year since I've checked), but I found that the MX would advertise OSPF routes, but not learn them. I would recommend combing through the documentation to verify the MX in your plan. I was able to cancel the upgrade. I was hesitant to apply it until I saw other people using it, so I scheduled it 30 days out. At first I thought all I could do was move the date, but figured out I could cancel it if I went to 'Organization' -> 'Firmware Upgrades' - 'Scheduled changes'. At that screen you will see the scheduled upgrade and will have the option to cancel. Once I did that, it was not pushed again. I definitely agree they shouldn't be pushing an RC like this in the first place. They don't make it easy or intuitive to cancel. It would have been much better to have a 'Skip this upgrade' option or something in the first notice. If I want to be a test bed for Meraki, I'll go get the software myself. I don't need it done automatically. That's not a stable way to manage infrastructure.

It does not sound like you have a device configured to route between these VLANs. All you have laid out is layer 2 switching, but have not talked about what (if anything is setup to do routing). You would have to have a single device connected to all VLANs (either an MX or switch with L3 routing turned on). You cannot forward traffic between VLANs without a routing device connected to all VLANs That routing device would have an IP address in each VLAN, which would use as a default gateway on that VLAN. Also as @PhilipDAth says, all of those VLANs would have to be defined in each switch. This is because the non-Meraki switches are not learning the VLAN from the Meraki network. Is there a reason you have to cascade the switches, rather than have both Switch 2 and 3 connect directly to Switch 1? What model is Switch 1? Is it Layer 3 capable, or do you have an MX?

Do you have any idea what firmware it had on it vs. the current level for the network it is plugged into? If it is far enough out, I could see it needing more than one pass at updating. I don't know that for sure because I have not had to do that.

Didn't see that option until you mentioned it. You have to go to the 'Scheduled changes' screen, then you have it there. I was on the 'Schedule upgrades' screen and it only have upgrade now or reschedule. Thanks.

Thanks for the info. I've found that you can reschedule the update for up to 30 days. I received the first notification on 2/13 and rescheduled for 3/13. I went back on 2/16 and was able to reschedule for Saturday 3/16, so it looks like a sliding 30 day window. I'm just going to keep moving the window until it is safe to install.

Has anyone tried this on the MX250? I have two sites with MX250 HA pairs and may try it this weekend. I'm only able to push out the update a month, since getting the notice on 2/13. I'm not seeing an obvious compelling reason to rush the update, so I'm a little concerned. @ToddB I have a site with an MX105 as well. Was it rebooting itself or were you having to reboot?

I've just installed an ExpressRoute between our data center and Azure. The ExpressRoute replaced a VPN tunnel between my MX250 HA pair in the data center and a vMX in Azure. Remote sites are connected to the data center MX250 pair hub and spoke VPN. I have a redundant pair of Cat 9300 switches in the same data center for the ExpressRoute, using a private ASN for Azure (private access only, nothing public). I'm trying to figure out if I can turn on BGP on my MX250 pair and peer with my Cat 9300 switches to get rid of the static routes, but the documentation I can find is VPN specific. I'm going to get a window to do some testing, but wanted to throw it out there to see if this is possible. I'm checking in advance because I wanted to use OSPF like this (then redist with BGP), but found that OSPF on the Meraki is really not full featured. Can I get my MX to iBGP peer with my Catalyst pair to extend BGP routing this last step? If I can do that, I'd probably want to turn it on to the remote sites too at some point when needed. Is there a gotcha with BGP on the Meraki I'll run into or should this work?
