HELLO, MERAKI API COMMUNITY!
We are thrilled to announce the launch of an exciting new feature in the Meraki Dashboard API: Callbacks.
WHAT ARE CALLBACKS?
Callbacks are a modern solution for times when you find yourself wondering about the status of your long running API tasks. They allow you to initiate a process, such as pinging a device or executing a phased deployment, and then step back. No more pondering "where you are and what you do" – the callback will bring the answers to you.
HOW DO CALLBACKS WORK?
Initiate an API call with a callback, and when it’s time for your network to respond, it's as if it’s saying, "Hello, is it me you're looking for?" You receive a notification at your specified webhook URL once the operation is completed, detailed with the operation’s status and results. This means real-time updates without the constant need to query the API.
Here is an example using the Ping LiveTool with a callback to retrieve the results into a remote service. This could be a database, messaging platform or maybe an interactive application.
WHY USE CALLBACKS?
Efficiency: Minimize the need for constant polling, saving both time and resources.
Real-Time Updates: Stay informed with immediate notifications about the status of your operations.
Streamlined Operations: Automate workflows more effectively by using the results from callbacks.
SUPPORTED ENDPOINTS
Our callbacks feature will be integrated across various async. endpoints, starting with Live Tools: Ping, Ping a Device and Wake on LAN as well as Action Batches. Look for the new API callback property in supported operations.
GET STARTED NOW!
Ready to simplify your network management? Explore our callbacks feature and discover how it can transform your applications. Check out our documentation and start integrating callbacks into your next Meraki API solution.
Share your creations and ideas in the thread!
Thanks,
The Meraki API Team

Note: This post was created by amoherek and posted on the Cisco Developer Community Hello friendly docs aficionados, I'm Adrienne Moherek from DevNet’s Developer Experience Team. You might have noticed some changes in the documentation on developer.cisco.com/docs, so I want to highlight some of those improvements to you. We have improved security for the way our system renders interactive OpenAPI Specification (OAS) documents. To ensure the developer.cisco.com infrastructure meets Cisco’s standards for customer data governance, we now provide test keys to run API requests in some of our documents. Before this release, you had to open the Configuration window and authorize your own credentials before making a request. With this new release, you can send a request in one click of the "Run" button. Also, you may have noticed a mask on the credentials with `*`, as well as unmodifiable server and credential fields to improve the experience and security of the interactive documents. For the interactive REST API documentation, the Configuration window is now organized into 3 tabs: Server, Variables, and Global headers. We hope this makes the experience smooth and enables you to use more variables in your test calls. Here are some additional handy features you may not know about for the developer docs on the DevNet site. Variables in the interactive docs: In any field, type two curly braces `{{` to see what variables are available. You can store variables in the Configuration window on the Variables tab. Get the latest version of a document: Choose "Latest" from the drop-down menu to ensure you have the most recent version. Locate items either in the Doc or the API reference portion of the document: Click in the search field and start typing, then click "See all results for ..." You get a list of results with a tag indicating whether it's in the API reference document or the narrative portion. Search the documentation catalog and filter results: You can go to https://developer.cisco.com/docs/search/ to filter documentation on the site by category, product name, topic, or type. Thank you for your support and patience as we continue to roll out improvements to the docs.

Dashboard UI for the API
a habitat for programmability
We are thrilled to introduce a new page in the Meraki Dashboard dedicated solely to API and Webhook management. Navigate to Organization → Configure → API & Webhooks to explore the new features designed to simplify your developer experience.
API & webhooks
Overview
The Overview section offers a streamlined approach to kick-start your API journey:
Generate API keys with ease
Set up your first webhook receiver
Quick links to essential documentation and community resources
Logs and Metrics coming soon
Overview
API Keys and access
Every API request requires a key to grant access to resources. With this new page, you can easily manage the keys associated with the current Dashboard user account.
View your personal API keys
Generate a new key
Revoke an existing key
API Key Management
Webhooks
Webhooks are a popular way to get notified when something changes with your network or a long running task has been completed. Instead of sending an email, an event could be sent to a messaging service like Webex or maybe an in-house logging application.
Learn more: meraki.io/webhooks
Receivers
Create webhook receivers across your various networks
Assign payload templates to integrate with remote services
Perform a quick test to validate your configuration
Webhook Receiver Management
Templates
Most 3rd party services will require special headers or body properties in order to accept a webhook. Templates provide a way to add and adjust these webhook properties to fit the service.
Webhook Template Management
Editor
Use our built-in template editor for writing and testing your own custom webhook integrations.
Create custom webhook templates
Define your own headers allowing for flexible security options.
Test with different data types such as if an AP went offline or if a camera detected motion

Webhook Template Editor
Other Highlights
API-First Approach: New API endpoints for generating and revoking API keys are now available.
Enhanced Security: The sharedSecret for webhook receivers will no longer be visible after setting, aligning with API key security best practices.
Stay Tuned: More exciting updates are on the horizon!

We are excited to announce the rollout of OpenAPI v3 support for the Meraki Dashboard API! Our API has transformed significantly starting with the adoption of Swagger, now known as OpenAPI v2. The integration of the OpenAPI Specification has been crucial in streamlining our API development process and crafting a seamless experience for developers. We're taking a significant leap forward by adopting the OpenAPI v3 Specification. This significant update is a testimony to our commitment to fostering a high-quality API contract and equipping our developer community with the most up-to-date tools and technologies. Key Improvements The transition to OpenAPI v3 brings a lot of great stuff and new possibilities for developers. Here are some of the initial improvements we're implementing out of the gate: Callback Support for Async Operations: The introduction of callbacks in v3 paves the way for better handling of complex, multi-step operations and outgoing 'callback' webhooks for asynchronous APIs and push notifications. This empowers developers to manage intricate, time-consuming tasks more efficiently, improving overall performance. Stay tuned as we adopt some of these new features into the Dashboard API (hint: liveTools & actionBatches). Enhanced API Definitions: Providing API response schemas are critical for strongly typed languages to ensure the data and types are as expected. OASv3 has enhanced these capabilities by providing flexible options to define dynamic, additive, and conditional properties which the Dashboard API is taking advantage of. Creating SDKs for your favorite language should be easier and more reliable than ever before. Improved Tooling and Validations: v3 introduces improved tools and validation mechanisms that streamline the API design, development, and testing processes. These enhancements ensure that the API's implementation aligns with its design, leading to a robust and reliable API experience. Learn more here ➡️ OpenAPI v3 Officially Supported!
