Re: Creating new network dashboard for existing network

Thank you Darren! That article is very helpful.... I decided to setup my remote office network dashboard as a copy of my current dashboard, edit the remote office dashboard to remove the primary office stuff, then try individually moving APs over from the current to the remote. This will minimize the impact on network availability while the AP changes from the current dashboard to the remote.  ... View more

Creating new network dashboard for existing network

I've been working on cleaning up some aspect of my network. Currently I have one Meraki network dashboard that runs everything. My company has two sites and I would like to diversify the dashboard to have one network dashboard for each site. If I create a new network for the remote site would I copy the configuration from my current site and just add the correct devices from the main site to the new one? Is this process going to impact my networks that are already in production or does this only affect the dashboard? ... View more

Re: MR Firmware - 26.6.1 Stable Release Candidate

It's interesting... I've checked/updated the firmware on my MR52's on a regular basis and I'm running 26.6 now. I got the e-mail from Meraki Support that says I'm scheduled to upgrade to 26.6.1 on 1/20/2020. I've been running Meraki for about 3 years now and I've never had my firmware upgrade for any Meraki device scheduled by Meraki Support. This along with the somewhat vague release notes as Nolan mentioned makes me wonder what's going on here. ... View more

Thanks Nolan... I did try moving to the 80Mhz range (as kYutobi suggested) as a test with some increase in speed... Not practical in production though...    I work at college and we're supposed to get an onslaught of about 80 high school kids this weekend so I'm trying to setup to handle 80 kids with multiple devices doing all kinds of things...  ... Question about throughput

by Karl_Jacobsen in Wireless LAN

Quick question about throughput on my Meraki wireless.... My network runs all MR52 access points and I've been trying to get some better throughput when I run speed tests. My test MR52 is running a CAT6 cable directly into a switch. We just installed a 1Gb Internet EDIA circuit. If I speed test with a laptop on the wired port, I get a download of around 800Mb down and 780Mb up from Speedtest.net If I speed test with the same laptop on a wireless connection to an MR52 I top out at about 120Mb up and down. The wireless network I'm connecting to is 5Ghz only with nobody else on it. I've whitelisted my laptop and there is no shaping being done. The MR52 is showing a 1Gb connection to the switch. Testing the throughput in the in the Meraki control panel shows me about 75Mb (down?).    I know there should be some loss when running speed tests but the numbers I'm seeing seem kinda extreme. I would expect to see at least 300 to 500 down. I've even tried running tests from Speedtest.net and my provider (thinking the shortest hop would be just off my network) with different devices and I still can't get any speed from it. I ran these tests using a test AP and test wifi network but even in my production environment I'm seeing the same 100 to 120Mb barrier on the speed test and about 300Mb test from the Meraki control panel on MR52 AP's with 2Gb uplinks.      ... Re: DHCP address for switch?

Okay.... I'll set them up as DHCP with a reservation on a management VLAN. That's what we've done for all of our AP's because we are using Radius for our staff network and the Radius server needs them tied to a specific address.    It's funny, the VLAN I'm using was specifically for wireless management. Now that we moved from Cisco wireless to Meraki it's becoming less of a wireless management VLAN and more of a general Meraki VLAN. My MV71's are setup as DHCP with no reservations... Wonder if I should standardize on everything in this VLAN having a reservation?  ... View more

DHCP address for switch?

Hi all,        I'm getting ready to install my first Meraki switch. This will be a layer 2 access switch only. The rest of my network is Cisco Catalyst. Normally when I setup the Catalyst switches, the switch if given a static address on our switch VLAN that has no Internet access. Needless to say, the Meraki switch will need to access the Internet so I can talk to the Meraki cloud. Would it be best practice to give the switch a static address instead of DHCP? The reason for the static on the Catalyst switch is because I need to access the switch directly through the CLI... not an issue with the Meraki. ... View more

Okay folks, here an interesting one.... I have a public wireless network in my Meraki environment that is in NAT mode using Meraki DHCP. I have a few business class multifunction copiers I'd like to use on this network as a printer. I've seen Ethernet to wireless adapters from companies like Netgear and IO but they rely on WPS which isn't supported under Meraki. Has anyone done something like this? I know it's a little unorthodox but this is for use maybe a handful of times a year.  ... View more

Thanks for the comment... Are you sure about the uplinks? According to Meraki's page, it lists the MS120-8 as having 2X1Gb SFP uplinks. While a agree with the benefits of having 10Gb uplinks, the fiber runs to these buildings only support 1Gb per pair. This combined with no need to have 20+ unused ports hardly seems like a good allocation of funds. Saving about $800 per switch makes sense.  ... View more

MS120-8FP with MR52 access points

‎10-16-2019 08:11 AM
Hi all,      Question about the MS120-8FP. I work at a college and we have a couple of small dorms on campus. We are all Meraki for our wifi but we're currently running Cisco Catalyst switches. Several of the dorms are only using two MR52 APs to cover the area in the building. I need to replace the 24 port Catalyst switch but all I need from the switch is to be able to run the two APs, and maybe one other device like a printer or an IP camera so I need 5 or 6 Ethernet ports. I was thinking about swapping our Catalyst switches for Meraki MS120-8FP switches. The AP's are PoE and we're only running two of them. If I do this will the MS120 be able to support link aggregation? The AP's have two ports on them so they can support up to 2Gb throughput per AP. ... View more

Public/Guest network

Hi all... At my work we have our corporate wifi network and we have a guest or public use wifi network. We currently use Meraki authentication (local accounts) and change the password monthly, so our accounts are january@domain.com for example. I'd like to change this so there's some tie back to the users and not use generic accounts. Looking at the access control page in my dashboard the only 3rd party option is Google and not everyone uses Google. I like the sponsored authorization but it gets difficult with larger groups.   There's no way to offer multiple styles of authentication is there? So the page would offer Google, LDAP, or sponsored authentication on the same splash page for example. ... View more

The network is set for Dual band operation with Band Steering and the minimum bit rate is set to 1. This is for our staff Vlan and used across two offices. Is there a way to tell if a client connected at 2.4 or at 5GHz? This particular client(s) are in a small office with a printer, the AP, and 2 to 3 users. Because they are well isolated, I could make a quick test network that is 5GHz only and see if that helps.   I'll check in with them about the drivers too.   ... View more

Slow ping times for some clients

I've been getting some complaints from some users about slow network performance on our wireless network. I've run a throughput test and it's great, no problems there. I pinged the clients from the access point and I'm seeing ping times en excess of 200ms. Other clients on the same AP are getting 3ms ping response. The clients that are slow are relatively new equipment (a MS Surface and an iPad Pro). Signal strength is high (52db). The fact that I can ping others on that AP with good results says it's a client issue and not a wireless issue. Is there anything I can do to help them? ... View more

MV21 recording gets really dark but not completely black Some cameras will randomly get darker during the middle of the day. The issue is generally resolved with a reboot of the device. I have this issue as well. I've had two MV71 cameras that just run dark, almost like when you're wearing sunglasses on a sunny day. A reboot of the camera fixes the issue. To date they've only done it once per camera. I've upgraded to newer firmware with no luck. ... View more
