Hey there I need some more glands. Apparently some of my people have been installing MRs without them and, well, thats bad. Not sure where to post this but I was wondering if anybody had any clever ideas on how to get the Meraki notifications out of your email and into some other app or even SMS. Any ideas appreciated except use the Meraki iOS app which is in serious need of attention. @CarolineS any idea on if that app might get any attention any time soon?

Hi Ritchie I have a couple properties (I both own and manage). One has 20 APs and the other 5. I have a few words of advice here as we have a lot of ground to cover on both. This is all based on my experience over the last 18 months Your mileage may vary. I began trying to use Meraki kit for all of my PtP links. We're talking 200 feet max. In these cases, MR74s with sector antennas have generally provided solid links. Not too quick but sufficient for most needs - 140mbit or so is the highest Ive seen with the right antennas. But it doenst always work right. I find the devices creating the mesh link need to be rebooted more often than Id like. There is a feature called the "wired hop" that I have attempted to make use of because it has a lot of potential (https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/WiFi_Basics_and_Best_Practices/Extending_the_LAN_with_a_Wireless_Mesh_Link) and its still immature. For example... I have one property where I have a repeater MR74 with a sector antenna pointed directly at a gateway MR84 150 feet away and much further away from the repeater 74 is another repeater 74 with antennas pointed in the complete opposite direction. The two repeaters are connected via an unmanaged switch inside the building theyre mounted on. The docs state that the device with the best connection will allow its connection to be used by the others. One would think the 74 with the antennas pointed DIRECTLY at the gateway would be that one, but somehow, even after replacing *all the hardware*, the one with the antennas pointing in the opposite direction still gives a better aggregate connection score and often handles the connection for the rest of the APs on the switch. Which is insane. I have spent hours with support. Nobody can figure it out. Recently, for my PtP needs I have explored other options from other vendors. The Ubiquiti Gigabeams and Nanobeams used in a pair to make a PtP link work *very well*. I still prefer Meraki for everything else in my network. I would not switch over for anything at this point. But for this one think I have found their implementation quite robust.

@PhilipDAth Yes, I just did that reading. That was a mistake. Its been fixed and the issue persists. So here is the behavior I notice. The App has a sign in feature. It works without being signed in, but the behavior is interesting. So on a phone that has never been signed in to the app, having just downloaded the app, when the wrong VLAN/SSID combo is chosen, it does not see the Sonos instance. Great. As expected. Thats the main behavior I want to avoid. When I get on the right SSID for Sonos with the App not signed in, it sees it and can control it. Great. Expected behavior. When I sign into the app, and then leave the right network/VLAN/SSID, it can still control the Sonos instance. If I disconnect from wifi, it can't. What the hell?

So I have several VLANs that I use to partition off various network services and devices. The users get to use one VLAN/SSID combo that has a Chromecast Audio on it as well which connects to my Sonos Play 5 via analog 35mm jack. The Sonos system has its own VLAN/SSID combo which it operates on. This keeps the ability to play music on one network and the ability to admin the Sonos on another. This has worked great forever. I just updated to Sonos' newest software S2 and updated my whole system. Now, this peculiar thing happens which is that even when I am on the user network, my S2 app allows me to control the system. Previously, it was not able to see it unless I was on their special VLAN/hidden SSID. What is going on? Does the S2 app and firmware somehow penetrate VLANs? Makes no sense to me. Hmm I wonder if this is why.... from the Sonos SSID config... Realizing I had duplicated settings from my original SSID that all had Bonjour forwarding to VLAN 1. I bet thats why. UPDATE - I tested. Thats not it. Yeah that sounds really involved just to get a wireless link across a long field or over a road. We have both situations here and I was skeptical but it has been rock solid at over 1.5gbit.

I was thinking today why doesn't Cisco/Meraki make something that does this? I would prefer to stick will full stack but I had the need to do some 300-400 foot wireless L2 bridges and my experience is using the Meraki HW in mesh isn't as solid. The mesh algorithm makes some weird decisions and I cant trust it 100%. I have used the L2 PtP hardware from that company that starts with U and ends with biquiti and I have to say its outstandingly good. Been up and running for a month. I have the receiving end connected to a switch and then 5+ Meraki indoor APs and have stressed it with many clients on each and the PtP bridge doesn't even break a sweat. Zoom, web, FaceTime, uploads, it just does it. Cisco make something like this and take my money!

Under what circumstances should one ever perform a factory reset on an MR? Is it normal troubleshooting tool or only under certain conditions? We have one in repeater mode that seems to intermittently lose its L3 link. At the distance Im not entirely surprised. Needs to be power cycled 2-3 times a day. I plan to wire it soon but was wondering if you all had thoughts on when a factory reset can help?

I realize for many use cases this may not be true but in my case what I am using as my metric is pure omnidirectional range in an outdoor environment. Like imagine a large garden or campsite where you can have one access point in the center of everything with Omni directional antennas. My experience so far in trying both of these models in this type of situation Is that the 84 seems to have almost double the range of the 74. Can anybody corroborate? If I were to make an analogy it seems like the difference between an MR 34 and an MR 52 practically. OK that is too harsh but you know the direction I’m pointing.

understood, but from what i understand you wont be using access ports to connect to switches and APs as they themselves will be carrying several VLANs. I thought they all should be trunk ports carrying all needed VLANs. Only supplying a switch with one VLAN seems antithetical to the notion.

@Uberseehandel - so if i understand this correctly, the native VLAN does not have to be added to trunks and the switches and APs will still lease IPs from the native VLAN subnet? If that is the case, then how do you, yourself, from a different "management" VLAN, access the switches and APs? Btw I think sometimes you think I am asking a more complex question than I actually am. The answer to this, like the above question where I didnt realize I could change the native VLAN on my wired MX ports, may be very simple.

I think my question would be how would you not use the native VLAN as the management VLAN? The native VLAN is what assigns IPs to switches and APs, no? So wouldn't you want to be on that VLAN to interface with all those pieces of hardware?

Yes I think I have figured it out. I just had literally forgotten that the actual ports on the MX determine the native vlan and that I was to configure them accordingly. Thanks for your patience. It makes sense now. The APs and the switches will all grab their IP from whatever the native VLAN is set to on the trunk originating at the port on the MX.

@Uberseehandel OK I think I figured it out. Tell me if I got this right. To make a management VLAN, Id create another VLAN (lets say VLAN 5), and then I would change this: I would select VLAN 5 from the "native VLAN" dropdown. This would tell anything connected at Layer 2 to join that VLAN. Then I would change ALL VLANs under "allowed" to the ones needed over each trunk port. I think thats the piece I was missing - to change the native VLAN on the wired ports.

Ok - thanks for going slow with me here. How does one define the "management VLAN"? Is it the VLAN labelled default? What makes it so? Right now, the IPs my switches and APs are leasing IPs from the range current ascribed to VLAN1 aka "Default". What designates a VLAN the management VLAN?
