Using MX ports as Access Ports on an External VLAN?

by DR1 in Security / SD-WAN

Hello,   I'm trying to find a way to connect devices to an MX so that they're on an Access VLAN thats managed by the L3 switch below the MX. Is there some creative way to do this?   The fall back solution will be to move the VLAN from the L3 switch to the MX and configure the L3 Switch with a relay, but I want to avoid this at all costs since it has caused other complications and problems in the past.   The devices in question are Managed PDU's which power the switches they are currently attached to. I want them connected directly to the MX so that I can cycle the power ports for the switches without loosing access to the Managed PDUs that they preside. ... View more

Heavily restricting allowed traffic on WAN2?

Hello,   I'm looking for advise on how best to approach limiting WAN2 traffic in the event of a failover from WAN1.   Our WAN1 is a 1Gbps-FD fiber connection. If its online, we want all traffic types to use it inclusively.   Our WAN2 is connected to a 4G LTE modem with limited speeds and expensive bandwidth. If WAN1 goes offline, we only want to allow some VoIP, Point-of-Sale transactions, and dashboard control traffic to pass over it.   This would be really easy if we were able to use the 4G LTE fail-over USB port. It has a dedicated IP table for limiting traffic types. I however can't find anything similar that allows for specific restrictions on WAN2.   There must be more than one way to do this right?   ... @JohnOetingerIf you're already that size, someone might have dropped the ball in your organization by not finding these resources already. They are in plain site, and well noted in MSP literature.   If you go here and look at the center of the page, theres a line item that says "For Partners" with a link to the MSP forum. @Meraki @Saralyn    Are you able to say if theres any plan on implementing LL-HLS support as an alternative to RSTP for local streaming? This would solve a lot of challenges for us and I'm sure many others:   It would suddenly be possible to have local stream videowalls that include a large number of cameras The latency/delay on the local stream would be within a reasonable threshold. Having local security cameras previews over RTSP that often show you something 10seconds in the past isn't ideal. The sub 3seconds that LL-HLS is capable of would be much more reasonable. It would significantly lower the cumulative bandwidth overhead when a large number of cameras need to be previewed ... View more

Redundant uplinks to MX from Switch Stack. Is it even possible?

by DR1 in Switching

‎11-23-2020 12:12 PM
I'm hoping someone can elucidate for me whether this is possible.   How can I achieve multiple(2 or more) redundant paths to our MX250 for internet resolution only?   We have three MS355-24X2 in a Stack Loop. One of these currently has an uplink to the MX250. If this switch has issues, we loose connectivity across every domain.   Given that the MX250 can't speak RSTP is there some way achieve uplink redundancy?   My hope is to provide physical links from each of the three stacked switches directly to the MX. If this isn't possible, I would at minimum like to provide secondary physical connections from downstream PoE switches with all our AP's and Cameras directly to the MX. ... View more

This seems to outline a use case for having active or updating firmware images cached on the MX appliance SSD (in cases were its a model that has storage).   Presumably you're using a single MS120 to manage 2+ HA links. If this isn't the case and you're using separate MS120, this might be overcome by staging upgrades.   Out of curiosity are these switches setup under a different Network than the MX appliance they're sitting in front of?   ... We have an MX250 as our Gateway, however its only managing three administrative subnets. Our L3 Core(which is doing 90% of the DHCP) is made up of 3x MS355-24X2 in a Stacking Loop, spread across three racks. Below this, we have a layer of 3x MS250-24/48, and 4x MS225-48LP   Along with the NDI, we have a significant amount of QLAN, Dante, and AES67 traffic being routed. All of if with A/B fail-over spanning different switches in a stack.  ... View more

We have BirdDog cameras using full NDI. Our validation tests didn't produce any uncertainty for us about using them with Meraki switches.   In a week or two, four of them will be in operation (along side 23 Meraki cameras, and hundreds of terabytes of routed A/V traffic) I'll post back here on our results, but honestly don't expect any problems. ... @Jerome_EVAGroup    I'm no longer an MSP and dont have access to the forum post you linked. Would you be willing to send it to me as a message? I've requested forum access but doubt I'll receive it without jumping through the hoop of becoming a partner.   Regarding what you shared:   This is invaluable! Thank you for sharing the details and first hand experience.   We have had success with 40G QSFP+ 3-meter and 5-meter DAC cables(3rd party sourced from fs.com) on the stacking ports of the MS355. The 7-meter DAC failed however, and 100G equivalent DAC's had a significant number of CRC errors.   Despite some CRC errors using the 40G DAC cables (amounting to .00000001% of all packets), we have had a mostly stable loop going on over a month.   During this time there has been an aggregate transfer total around 500Terabytes. Our approximate calculations has the vast majority of that total passing over the stacking cables.   There have been two anomalous events, but we haven't been able to isolate the problem as being the result of the stacking and not something else.   I'll follow your advise and try to get the fiber pin-out from a CSE.   Whatever success or failure we have, I'll post back here.   ... Hello,   We are trying to validate an installation scenario that involves stacking  three MS355-24X2 switches that are spread between three physical racks.   The distance between the racks makes it impossible to use the Meraki branded stacking cables.   We have managed to get things 'sort of working' with QSFP+ DAC cables to create a 40GB stacking loop, but have CRC errors during highbandwidth transfers and other anomalous issues.   Since Meraki support and its official stance on this makes them effectively useless and any client, I've come here.   Has anyone needed to do Meraki stacking with off-brand DAC/AOC or transceivers? What did you use?   Has anyone managed to find out what the required coding is for transceivers to work optimally on the QSFP+ and/or QSFP28 stacking ports on any Meraki series switches? ... Looking for advice: How to transit through another organizations intranet s...

Hello,   We are running a full-stack of Meraki equipment and have a challenge that after months of tests, I have yet to find an ideal solution for.   Our business has two physical locations inside of the same large building. Lets call them Office A and Office B. Office A houses the MX appliance, and all intranet resources. Office B is a remote office that needs high speed(1GbE access) to the resources in Office A.   This building is managed by another organization. We need to bridge our intranet securely between these two locations, however running our own physical cable is not possible or practical. This means passing through their infrastructure.   This other organization has given us a transparent link between the two locations that transits through Cisco Catalyst switches they manage. They have from their side isolated us in our own VLAN so that we're able to broadcast DHCP in Office A, and pickup addresses from wall jacks in Office B (that are passing through their Cisco switches).   The above solution isn't suitable however. They are using significantly out of date iOS version on past EOL switches, and we have lost confidence is giving them this much trust.    Our temporary solution is connecting to this other organizations wifi SSID and then connecting through our MX appliance via Client-to-Site VPN connections. This is really not optimal for all the obvious reasons   I have also tried configuring a Meraki Access Point in Office B with an SSID using the VPN concentration feature. This setup gives us all the 'green lights' that its working, however wireless devices connected to the SSID in Office B are blocked from intranet access. Probably because the Access Port in Office A is configured as 'port isolation: enabled', and the AP is not really doing a VPN connection to the MX because it believes its on the local network already and not at a remote site.   Short of purchasing another MX appliance, do we not have other options? Is there a way to get the AP-to-MX VPN concentrator actually working, despite the physical topology? Are there any encapsulation protocols I should be exploring? Is there a way to get 802.1x based authentication working for multiple remote devices in Office B connecting to an Access Port in Office A, despite transiting over this other organizations infrastructure?     I was sure there was an easy solution to this. If anyone has suggestions or ideas, I'll try them.   Thank you ... View more

Hello,   We're interesting in determining if we could use data via the API from MV32 cameras in a larger square rooms (with a high ceiling) to calculate and approximate distance between objects in more or less real time.   The use case is auditing/assessing if social distancing guidance is being respected in a large gallery/museum space.   I seem to recall stumbling across someone attempting this but cant find the post.   Maybe theres already a 3rd part solution we could use?   Thanks for any guidance that can be offered. ... Hello,   I saw your post and signed up to ask this question. We're in the middle of trialling a full stack of network, wifi, and meraki cameras for a fairly large museum space.   We're interesting in using the MV32, MV22x, or both for counting the number of people at any given moment in very large rooms with 12' high ceilings. Some of these rooms will be quite dark.   There could be 100 people in a room, with people streaming in and out constantly with that number increasing and decreasing constantly.   Regarding per camera object detection: Is there any 'upper limits' for maximum number of object detections at a time per. camera that we should be aware of? This detail is not explored or mentioned anywhere in the documentation. It seems likely that the performance hit on the hardware would scale up to some kind of hard limit, or start to loose its fidelity due to buffering.   Along these lines, do you know if theres already a feature in the dashboard that displays a quantity of type(people in the case) of objects detected? If not, can these be extrapolated from the API?   Thank you, Darius ... View more
