There are several instences where devices need to find each other across subnets. Cisco IOS has a feature called helper IP that can facilitate this. Does meraki have anything simila Basically I have a Sonos system on one subnet and I would like to give people on the guest network access to the sonos system. Sonos can't comunicate with anything outside it's broadcast domain.

But legitimate DNS request would also be dropped. The problem is there are bad URLs out there that serve adware and are used by products like this TV to send user data. At the same time there are good URLs that this TV may use. Just dropping all DNS traffic isn't a good solution. What this Pi-hole does is it keeps a list of the bad URLs and drops DNS request for those URLs while letting good ones go through. The added benefit is that it acts as a network wide adblocker. I guess this really is a feature meant for a stand alone DNS server and it's crazy of me to expect it from a router.

It's probably a feature request but it would be nice to be able to add curated black and white list files. So you'd have a publicly maintained txt file of bad domains that the meraki would then check periodically and update its own firewall. Not just rely on cisco's list.

I came across this Story on Business Insider about TVs selling private data. I then came across users who suggested Pi-Hole for blocking DNS request from these TVs. Is there a way to duplicate the functionality of Pi-Hole on the meraki platform?

That would have been great but no it brought down the entire network each time and the network stayed down. Wouldn't return back to normal until I did a factory restore. I really don't have 2 hours to spare to see if the try again feature works.

from what I understand about Data Centers is that they have a hot isle and a cold isle. It seems like not the best idea to put the MX and some MS behind other MSes. They are going to intake the hot air discharge from the switches in front of them. I'm sure in a climate controlled environment the equipment won't ever reach a temperature that it will matter but it's an inefficient rack design.

Hello fellow Meraki users, Since 13.28 for the MX I've seen at least 5 sites update fail. When I push through an update on any of these sites the MX fails. I then have to travel onsite and do a factory default on the Security Appliance. I then have to attempt to do the update several times before it finally takes. The only common denominator with all these sites is they are on optimum/cable vision internet service. Our other clients with similar equipment do not have this issue. I've opened up several cases on this but because after a few tries the update does go through and the MX works fine afterward. The issue is now I don't push updates unless I'm onsite and I am willing to be down for at least an hour. Any ideas on why these updates are failing? Is there anyway to get to internal logs to find out why an update failed?

I have 4 clients on my wireless that keep dropping off. I want to tag them so I get an alert when they drop off and compile data to help trouble shoot. I see in the alerts section I can tag anything on the LAN but I don't think you can tag clients on the wireless LAN. Is there a way I can track clients on the wireless and get an alert when they drop from the network?

you know it'd really be assome if Meraki would give us visibility under the hood. CPU utiliazation, temperature sensonsrs ..ect. You could have set an alert to notify you when CPU utiliazation went above 50 or 60%. might have prevented your network from going down entirly if you could have gotten to it early. I wish Meraki would implement ALL features of the cisco IOS platform into their switches.

I want to prevent MDM from being removed from a phone. I understand that DEP has to be set up at activation. These devices are already in use however. Can I back up the device to iTunes, wipe then, enroll them in DEP, and then restore from a back up? will this negate the DEP enrollment or will the DEP enrollment survive the restore?

It seems that some loop prevention is going on. Do all of your VRFs share the same IP scheme? I agree with Philip in that you might need to put each port into a different VLAN. In order to answer why the MX would issue a route change we would have to know more about your topology and IP addressing scheme. Off the top of my head your VRFs share what looks to the MX like common paths to the same network so it's choosing what it thinks is the shortest path to that network and shutting down the other 2 paths.

On a traditional Cisco network set up, I'd have a management VLAN that is only accessible from a port on a switch in a locked network closet or through a VPN connection that only network Admins have access to. This way the management traffic never touches normal traffic. Ideally I'd set up a serial console server to which I'd have to hardwire and just access the CLI though that never even putting the management traffic on a network. Lastly I was taught that no traffic should ever be flowing on the native VLAN. all native VLAN traffic should be dropped at the router. The thinking behind this is that nothing on your network should be untagged. All traffic entering your network should be placed on a VLAN. The native VLAN should be some obscure VLAN not used. It should never be VLAN1 With Meraki can I have the same level of control over the management traffic? Can I have all my equipment on a Management VLAN? What's the best practice for Meraki concerning the IP addresses of their equipment? Coming from the IOS world to the meraki platform is sort of like a WIndows guy moving to an OSX environment. Computing in general is universal it's the details that are different. I hope this all makes sense.

If I understand this correct, the picture above is your topology? Seems like the meraki is preventing a routing loop. Are you trying to use Link aggregation? Routers traditionally don't do Link Bonding. That's a Switch thing. And Load balancing I believe only works on the WAN ports. I think a little more info is needed. What's your goal in connecting 3 links between your MX and your Switch? The fact that your Meraki Tech is stumped leads me to believe this is a little more complex than I'm seeing.

IoT is going to be if not already the bane of our existence. Right now there are 2 types of IoTs. The ones that are strictly cloud based, the client talks to the cloud which in turn talks to the IoT and vice versa. Then you've got the IoT stuff that communicates on the local LAN so you're kind of stuck if the IoT device relies on layer 2 communications. So far most of the IoT stuff I encountered doesn't need to be on the same LAN except for the Bonjoure stuff. Interestingly enough I just learned that apple devices use bluetooth to take care of what Bonjoure is supposed to do. I had an installation where unbeknownst to me the client installed an Apple TV and placed it on the guest SSID. The guest SSID is set up so no one can see each other. I was freaked out when I saw that Airplay worked on the Guest wifi. After a lot of poking around I turned off bluetooth on my MacBook and saw that airplay no longer worked. I a bit confused about your set up. How do you avoid double NAT with the BrandX gateway in front of the MX. I adamantly don't know what a brandx gateway even is.

First I’d like to thank you for the reply, I have seen the guide on DSL reports but the only solution to this problem involved MAC address Spoofing which Meraki is incapable of. But there seems to be some more recent posts about this subject that I haven’t seen. So I’ll go through those. Skimming through the posts I see a lot of Port Forwarding trial and error stuff that has to be done on my part. A simple DMZ would resolve this. But how to set up a DMZ without an additional static IP?
