Switch to Switch Fiber connection Issue
Hello Everyone
as I am dealing first time with fiber optic, I am having some Issue, I have one switch in MDF (2nd floor) C9300 and second switch MS225 on IDF (Ground floor) my cable guy ran fiber optic cable but when I connect fiber patch cable to switches then fiber ports are not coming up, we used Multimode fiber cable 6 Strawn,
I already verified that C9300 switch receiver, patch cable and MS225 receiver are good by connecting in MDF same floor. the problem coming when I try to connect IDF MS225 which is ground floor and C9300 MDF on second floor.
Is there any other way i can trouble shoot, my cable guy saying he can see light, on both end of the fiber cable, and the device he is using to check fiber cable showing 99% or 98% good.
Is there any compatibly issue or where we are making end connector for Fiber?
Solved! Go to solution.

If everything works when the equipment is in the same room using the same SFPs and patch cables you are otherwise using, the first thing I'd try is swapping the TX/RX on one end. Here is an example you tube video describing that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OKtF97VT8ts
If it still doesn't work then, I'd be looking at the cable guy. Perhaps there was some miscommunication about what type of fiber was run? or maybe the distance is too far for the type of connection you are trying to use? For example if they installed OM1 and you are using 10gb sfps, the max distance is 33 meters. What type of multimode were they supposed to install and what is the distance? You can try to verify what they used by checking the sheathing on the cable. It's usually written on there.

@AzeemHaider , this will fix the issue. Swap the heads round at one end of your fibre patch lead.

What SFP modules and patch leads are you using as there are modules and leads for both single and multimode.
Also there are different variants of Multimode i.e. OM3 and OM4. Everything needs to match.

I am try to get that info from cable guy is that OM3 or OM4
the SFP is
MA-SFP-10GB-SR
from invoice i can see these number
Multimode Fiber Cable 6 STRAWN
Fiber Patch Cord (50 Micron 10GB, Aqua.3M LC-LC
and I been told that distance is good too.

Aqua typically indicates OM3.
MA-SFP-10GB-SR would be compatible with the OM3 LC-LC (MM) fiber and both switches.
I suspect the 6 strand fiber at each end are not the same. I would focus to make sure each end is being used the same at both end.

I'd be inclined to start the troubleshooting process or steps by verifying that your SFP or SFP+ part numbers are the right modules for the C9300 and MS225s followed by the second step of verifying the right fiber was used. You mentioned the 6 strand fiber....are the same strand being used on both ends or are they mis-matched?
If the tech can see lights at both ends, what does the dashboard show? Are the ports the SFP modules are inserted in coming up (on)?
Hopefully it's as easy as a fix that @Mloraditch mentioned (swapping one fiber end).

Try swapping one pair around and see if the link comes up, I've had that in the past where installer had incorrectly installed into panel.

Thats great news, I'd contact the installer and get them to rectify it so that it's not a problem in the future.

If you connect a switch and patch at one end then go to the other end with your phone and point the camera into the fibre ports you will safely and easily see which fibre the light is coming out of. You might need to repeat in the other direction to find the other one of the pair. Don't stare into the ports as the laser can damage your eyesight.
