The caption on the picture should read 10base5 not 10base2  ( I am getting old)   The DEC transceivers where added to the coax with a "vampire" tap,   We used to have to drill a hole in the coax and be careful not to short the shielding out with the center conductor.   The good old days!  🙂 ...
