Re: VoIP Phone Broadcasting - Multicast - no longer working

I appreciate the additional info. Unless I read it wrong, it pertained to a network using multiple VLANs as well as more than one switch. I don't need to forward or traffic to another device.   And recall that it worked for 1 hour, until it just stopped working.   Unless Im off base here, I don't think that article pertains to my issue. I'm still open for ideas if anyone has them. ... View more

I'll try this, thanks for the suggestion. Followup question: Since there are no VLANs on the network, is the VLAN required, or just "1?"   The form requires a subnet. For a single class C, is i 255.255.255.0, or is it a multicast range?   Is the Interface IP on the local subnet? What would I enter there? ... View more

VoIP Phone Broadcasting - Multicast - no longer working

I have a basic set up - MX67, MS225-24P , and a single  MR33 at a small office. There no vlans.   I was playing with some Yealink VoIP phones today, and setting up the group paging feature. The phones are wired in, so the AP is not in play.   It was working fine, until it just stopped.   I tried several IP addresses (all in the multicast range). I rebooted everything. I spent almost 3 hours on the phone with the phone vendor.   IGMP snooping & Flood unknown multicast traffic are both enabled.   The phones were reset to factory settings several times.   Nothing I tried would make it work again.   Any ideas on how to either test it or get it working again? ... Is it possible for a switch to kill a phone?

I know it may be a strange question, but I'm at a loss for answers.   The customer has one phone on a switch port (of many phones and many switch ports). The phone died.   We configured a new phone here at my office and confirmed that it worked.   Took it to the customer, and it lasted less than 10 seconds on their network. After its supposed death, we swapped locations, cables, switch ports, and even plugged directly into the switch, and yes, the phone really is dead. Won't power on even with a power adaptor.   Is this a wiring problem (the wiring guys say no, they tested), a patch panel problem, or a switch problem? ... View more

I've never waited that long. When it stops working, I start looking for answers. The first few times by rebooting, then digging deeper, only to discover that changing the DNS fixes it (after I realized pinging the IP address worked, but the name did not.   I will try to capture packets on the machine next time it happens. ... sudden loss of dns

I've got one device on my network that randomly, and suddenly, loses its connection to the internet. Full stack Meraki; wired and wireless interfaces are affected.   The short term fix is to change the DNS from the Meraki DHCP assigned address to something else.   Device is an iMac 24" M1, running 12.3, but the problem has been around since release of the iMac when it was running previous OSes.   When it fails, WiFi only devices, such as an iPad, continue to work.   This means it only affects the one wired device on the network - the other wireless users either never notice it or never complain - and that includes just one portable device and a few TV's. And the TV's are ALWAYS on, so it seems to be just affecting the iMac.   It is completely random - there is no way to do a packet capture when it happens - but it happens 1-3 times per month.   Any ideas on tracking this down? ... Streaming TV's pixelating

Need some help trying to fix Smart/streaming TV's pixelating. TV's are Samsung "The Frame" if it matters.   Area / location might be important to this: Old Town, Alexandria, VA. Old homes & buildings (some of them hundreds of years). Property records say the home was built in 1978, but I'm not sure how true this is - could have been 2 houses put together as is common for larger homes in the area. Slightly less than 3 miles from the tip of Washington Reagan Airport, but out of the actual flight path by about 2/3 mile.   Network is wireless only, 3 x MR36. Second floor device is the wired one.   Basic Indoor Profile has been edited to allow for band steering, minimum bitrate on 2.4GHz is 24, and minimum bitrate on 5GHz is 12           TV 1   TV 2   TV 3   ... multicast over wifi? - elgato key light air wifi connected studio/podcast l...

I've got a couple of these lights on my network:https://www.elgato.com/en/key-light-air   They are controlled by software on the computer; there is no way to interact with the lights directly.   Once the lights are added to the network, they almost completely disappear - the software sees them, and can control them, less than 5% of the time (in my experience).   the lights are shown on the dashboard, and there is good signal to both.   But since the Elgato Control Center software cannot interact with the lights, I can't turn them on or off, short of unplugging them.   Elgato's support has been terrible. They blame the computer (but the software doesn't find the lights on the phone, the tablet, or any other computing device. They blame the network, which I can understand, but my network consists of one vlan and a couple of SSID's, all of which are able to communicate with each other. The computer, phone, tablet, and lights are all on the same SSID.   Now elgato support is asking if multicast is enabled over wifi. It looks to me to be enabled by default (https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/Other_Topics/Multicast-Unicast_Conversion), but what do I know?   Has anyone experienced this? Anyone know of a way out of this mess? ... View more

SONOS Move & wifi lan isolation

by macsolutions in Wireless LAN

‎08-07-2021 09:50 AM
I've got a bunch of Sonos equipment in my house, and just added some WiFi only Moves.   I also have a secure and IOT wifi networks; all of the Sonos and other junk connect to the IOT side of things.   The trouble I was seeing was I could play to the house except for the moves, or I could play to one Move - at a time. If I started the music streaming on a Move, I couldn't add the other, and if I started in the house, I couldn't add the Move. It just wouldn't play. It would appear to be part of the group, but no noise would come out.   In talking to Sonos support, they had me adjust the rule (boxed in red) at the bottom of the screen shot - allow any any to the local lan. and that fixes things. But it kind of defeats the purpose of a separate IOT network, doesn't it?   So I went searching for the ports that the Sonos products use, and that resulted in the rules (boxed in green) to see if things would work. When I disabled the red rule, problem returned; nothing in the green boxes fixes anything (I first tried destination 192.168.128.0/24 before trying Any) makes it work.    Is there any rule I can insert that will give me peace of mind and let me still play all the Sonos devices together?     ... First full-stack Meraki Go installed today - question on port forwarding

by macsolutions in Questions (and Answers!)

‎11-20-2019 03:45 PM
I did my first full stack (Firewall, Switch, WiFi) install today. No real problems, but some of the devices had to be repeatedly rebooted to get them to configure correctly.   Now that everything is in and it appears to be working well enough, customer has asked me for a VPN (they didn't ask about that before I did the install!!!)   I've got a machine inside of the network configured as a VPN server now, but I can't seem to poke any holes in the firewall.   I've got port 1701 UDP forwarded to my VPN machine, but I can't figure out where I'm getting stopped. I don't think it's a problem behind the firewall, because I've got 2 other ports forwarded to different machines, and those don't connect either.   I did an NMAP port scan on the network, and there are no open ports.   So what do I need to do to actually open the ports?       ... Identifying things blocked by layer 7 rules

I'm trying to only allow certain countries, but some things are getting blocked that shouldn't be.   For example, today I was trying to do an Apple iCloud password reset, and even though I was allowing the US, Canada, and most of western Europe, it still wouldn't work until I removed the rule.   Is there a way, in the logging, to detect what or where the block occurred? I did a visual traceroute, and it didn't seem to route through any non-allowed countries. In the syslog server, what search would I set up to know when a blocking rule was enforced? ... View more
