Taking hours doesn't seem normal to me, I don't use SM for MacOS devices but when using Jamf and Intune I have found installing applications doesn't take hours.   SM should be sending a command for the client device to pull down the installer and download it, now unless your internet connection is really slow this shouldn't take hours. ...
