Upgrading a switch network with a mix of MS and monitor mode Catalyst

Does anyone know what happens if you upgrade a switch network from 15.20 where there are multiple MS switches and Catalyst 9300s in monitor mode to 16.2 for both?

Obviously the MSs just upgrade, but do the Catalysts go to fully managed, or remain in monitor mode?

Hi Charles, i haven't dipped my toe in that one as yet but assume there would be more to the configuration side of things to move from monitor to fully managed.  But we know that assumptions can be dangerous.
