How to Configure RSPAN / VLAN based SPAN

Hi all,

With the release of MS17.2.1, we understand that RSPAN and VLAN based SPAN is available to use on switches.

I've tried to follow the video Meraki Switching Update Q4 FY 2024 - YouTube and navigte to Switching - Switch Settings but I do not see a Traffic Mirroring option.

I have also checked and was not able to find any documentation on it.

Does anyone have any idea how to enable this feature and setup and if there's any documentation available that I might have missed?

Thanks in advance!

Enhanced Tooling and Visibility

  • RSPAN & VLAN Based SPAN: this feature enhances the current Traffic Mirroring feature by making it more robust and scalable when spanning a session from one switch to another for analyzing port traffic. It provides the ability to utilize VLAN and a physical port as a source and destination when configuring RSPAN sessions between switches along with VLAN filters.  Review the documentation for details.

HI DarrenOC,

Thank you for your response. I have tried to click the documentation but it requires me to login to a Portal which I do not have access of.

Are you aware of what needs to be done exactly to enable RSPAN or VLAN based SPAN?

I have setup port mirroring but it only allows me to do it on ports and only on the same switch as the source.

I have raised with Meraki TAC but have not yet heard back either.

Any guidance would be appreciated

Hi @Craieggg - I have multiple Orgs and Networks running this firmware and I can’t locate where you would enable/configure both Vlan or rspan

What is you switch model?

Reminder: MS17 is available to all Meraki Switches, except for MS390 and Catalyst 9300-M.

Another thing, usually when it is not available in the dashboard, is probably something that should be requested from Meraki to enable.

You can also call support instead of waiting for a response.

Thanks for your response.

I did reach out to Support and they confirmed that this feature is not yet available on the dashboard.

Hello @Craieggg,

If you go to the Organization > Monitor > Firmware Upgrades and look at the release notes for 'IOS XE 17.15.1.9', there is a message addressing VLAN RSPAN/SPAN.

Getting noticed

I contacted Meraki Support and confirmed that the feature is not yet available for configuration in the Dashboard.

Given that, my question is: why include it in the firmware release notes if it's not yet accessible?

Dashboard has it's own releases that are separate from the switches.
This is why with native IOS-XE you will have access to all the Cisco features even if they are not yet available in a dashboard GUI or API.

IOS-XE is not Meraki. The release notes and formal documentation mentions it.

Agreed, we just came across this today because of your post, this is a surprise as it has release notes and formal documentation. We specifically upgraded all our clients network for NDR project to find RSPAN is not available as yet as they have not released the dashboard. IOS-XE is not Meraki.
