Thank you @Mloraditch ! I've now tried this out and the result is the same as using the UI. Basic settings like Name, Management, Tags, Notes, Address are preserved during the "move". Ports and any L3/Routing settings are lost. As I already had code to backup and reapply the lost configs, this was the missing link for moving devices in an automated manner.
