Do Port Management Privileges Allow Changing Client Names

We have several networks that we want to allow local personnel to administer, so we set up port management privileges on those networks for our "PortAdmins" (this is our term, not a Meraki term).  The users are allowed to modify port settings on User ports (non-uplink, non-AP, non-high profile ports).

We would also like to transition away from "renaming" the ports as a descriptive of what is plugged in, and go to "renaming" the client object to something more desciptive and easier to find using a client search.  However, it would seem that PortAdmin privilege does not allow for modifying the client name.

Is this correct?  Does anyone know a way around it (without giving full rights to the Network or Organization)?

Thanks,

The client name is the name of the client/device. Meraki is purely reporting on it. If the name of the client/device is wrong or not clear then the naming standards of the devices need to be updated.

Are you maybe looking for profiling?

@Aaron_Wilson  you are correct but some devices have horrible hostnames that are not easy to change and this is where setting them on the dashboard is useful.

@Kevin_Atchley be aware that updating the name on the dashboard only affects the dashboard and not the actual devices hostname, you are probably already aware of this but just wanted to make sure before you started heading down that path.

HA! I never realized you could rename a client in the Meraki dashboard. Interesting feature.

Thank you, and Yes I am aware that editing the client name in the Meraki dashboard doesn't change the DNS/Host name on the device.

We are merely looking for a way to document device information without tying it to the switch port description, which may change as the device moves.

@Kevin_Atchley perfect manually setting the name in the dashboard will do the trick, if you look at a switch port it will show in the current clients list as well.
