Airplay & Screen mirroring

Hi All,

Sorry if this question is duplicated and a long post 😊. I have a question regarding the Airplay and screen mirroring issue from my iPhone with a smart TV (LG). My phone can see the LG when I'm trying to mirror the screen. However, it came with error message and can't mirror. I'm trying another iPhone on the same network, and failed. When I use a Windows laptop to do wireless connect display, it worked just fine. So I narrowed down just the Boujour or something with my phone/TV. I then connect both of them to another Wi-Fi lab without Meraki in the environment, I can mirror without any issues. What am I missing here with Meraki setup? Here's my setup: I  have a MR 36 and MX68 on a flat network with no VLANs. I set MX68 on the "Passthrough or VPN concentrator" and all the IP addresses coming from ISP gateway. For the MR36, it's on the "Bridge mode".

AirPlay uses Bonjour (mDNS) to discover devices on the same network.

I tend to avoid configuring Bonjour forwarding on the AP, and instead configure it only on the MX. I've had some difficulties with Bonjour on the MR.

I believe the MR's have issues when your _service_ is not listed under their preprogrammed services.  The MX will forward others if you set it to all services.

You shouldn't need bonjour forwarding if the devices are on the same L2 network.

Have you got any firewall settings on the SSID blocking local connections or block local LAN?

It's likely the windows laptop works because it's using Miracast which is a "Wi-Fi Direct" technology and doesn't require both devices on the same network.

@Brash looks like this policy in the MR (I believe it's there already because I can't recall I set it) probably causing my issues:

Yes, that's probably the problem, set it to allowed.

So I've changed that Deny policy to Allow and it still didn't work either. I'm still stuck at this point.

I suggest you perform a packet capture.  

Otherwise I suggest you open a support case.

I've changed the Policy mentioned above in MR. I still have the issues. I'm stuck at this point.

I was having a similar issue with my Sonos and printers. Overall airplay works with Apple TVs and other smart devices but some services like printing and AirPlay from Apple Music wasn’t working consistently across all devices

I just upgraded all of my Meraki equipment, including switches, MX and wireless to the latest stable release candidate and that seems to fix my issue for now. Are you still having this problem

Do you know from what version to what version ? Especially for MR software ?
Because I think I might be seeing something similar where the client and streaming device is on the same vlan, same ssid, and so on, no security on the firewall part of the AP,  but nothing happens.
If I connect both to a simple home router, it works.

I figured it out, there is a bug in the latest MR32.2.1 that breaks mDNS.
Back to MR31.1.8 and everything works as expected.

What makes you think it is a bug in the firmware? Because I have a feeling it’s the AirPlay devices themselves that simply stop talking mDNS after a while.

i have an AirPlay devices themselves which seems to work after it is rebooted, but after a while it just disappears.

I see all the mDNS packets from the wireless device, on the wired side of the AP 🙂

But apparently they are not forwarded on the radio, almost like P2P blocking on the wireless side for mDNS.

I made a case, they pointed me to a known mDNS issue on the latest MR32.2.1

When I downgraded everything worked as intended.

(It was not just airplay, also other mirroring / casting devices - but all related to mDNS)
