Question on license renewal

Question on license renewal

Currently I have an MX64, two MS220 and a MR46 in my home lab and the license is expiring in the end of January. I have purchased an MX68W with license along with renewing my two MS220.
I have duplicated my network and the new MX68 is on the network and does have the configuration. My question is, if I enter the license renewal key, will my MX64 drop off?  Should I remove the MX64 from the network, then move the MX68 to the existing network and then apply the renewal license? Then I have a separate 5 year license for the MR46 that I can add as a device after?

Licenses are applied at the Organisation level it the network level.

Maybe consider switching to PDL structure or as you say remove the MX64 from your org all together.

Consider to check the licensing calculator....it's still beta but it maid help you. Only  for co-terminating licenses.

still, I would remove devices which you do not use anymore from the inventory.

You also mentioned that you will add a 5y license for a MR46...if you add it there will be a new co termination date calculated for everything.

@fella5 everything that @DarrenOC and @rwiesmann have said is good advice, but how to proceed really depends on what is currently licensed. This document, https://documentation.meraki.com/General_Administration/Licensing/Meraki_Licensing_-_License_More_De... provides a good description of what happens if you apply a license as a renewal - it essentially resets all your licensed devices to match what’s in that license.

So, if you currently have the MX64 and two MS220 licensed then you could apply the new MS220 licenses as a renewal (thus resetting the licensing to just the MS220 switches), then you can add the MX68W license, and then the new MR46 license - so your licensing should finally end up with two MS220, a MX68W and a MR46 (you’ll need to remove the MX64 from all networks to prevent licensing errors).

However, if you’ve already added the MX68W license you’re a little stuck, you might have to see if support can help you out in anyway, or move across to Per Device Licensing as @DarrenOC suggested.

Thanks... I did read the license documentation over and over.  However, what Cisco provided me is with a license key that has the renewal for the MS220’s and the 3 year license for the MX68. They just told me to make sure I use the renewal when I add the key. Then separately, I was provided an MR46 with a 5 year license. Not too worried about the MR46 as I will just add that license later.

Maybe what I will do over the weekend is just remove the MX64/68 from the network and then add the MX68 to the existing network, then wait for that to come online then add the renewal license then the ap license.
Is that a good plan?

@fella5 in co-term license mode, I think that if you apply the renewal of the MS220s alongside the new 68 then anything else will become unlicensed.  If you change to per device licensing first then the new license would only affect the items included in it.  When you then add the MR46 license later then that will only affect that device.  You will end up with different end dates though on a small network that shouldn't be a big issue.

@cmr - not if he then purchases the 1 day licences to bring everything in line 😁

Well what I ended up doing is just swapping the two MX, renewed the dashboard license and then added the ap license.  Thanks everyone for your input.
