Re: Enabling Cert-based Authentication for Mobile Phones

Thanks Philip for this info. Customer owns the Intune so they will be pushing the certs. We own their Meraki solution so is there anything to be aware of from Meraki's perspective i.e any issues in authenticating mobile phones using certs ? Also is it common to use the same SSID for Corp laptops and mobile phones? I am pushing for SSID re-use using group policy to enforce restrictions on mobile phones as opposed to introducing a new SSID just for the purpose of Corp phones.  Thanks,   ... View more

I have since spoken to the customer more about this and found out they already have Intune as their MDM solution. So they are interested in using that to roll out the certificates to the corporate mobiles.  Will that still be challenging ? The way I see it, once they have rollout the the certs to the mobile phones using Intune, Meraki would just see it in the same way as it sees the laptops today and hence authenticate using Radius 802.1x. In such a scenario, is it recommended to separate the SSIDs though for Corp mobile phones and laptops ? ... View more

Enabling Cert-based Authentication for Mobile Phones

Hi My customer is using Radius auth for their Corporate SSID which authenticates the company issued laptops based on Cert. They want to extend this authentication mechanism to Corporate-issued mobile phones too such that corporate issued mobile phones are authenticated seamlessly in the similar fashion through cert. My question is has anyone done this before and were there any challenges faced? Is it as straight-forward as it looks ?   Thanks, Mariam ... View more

Hi My customer is looking to design an appealing splash page for Guest access. They are currently using default template of Splash Page on the dashboard which is pretty basic. I have seen other options like Excap or SplashAccess but want to explore what you can achieve with the PHP custom script on the dashboard. Can you please share some images of the Splash Pages you have been able to design with custom script on the dashboard?   Thanks, Mariam ... View more

Thanks for your response. I do not have access to Radius server log. But will propose this to the team who owns it. So in a typical environment we expect to see 0% authentication issues and 0% DHCP issues unlike association issues which can be present just because the client tried to connect two APs at the same time and then chose one ? ... DHCP Issues in Bridge Mode

Hi  I am seeing loads of DHCP errors across all the sites for a customer with the following message although when I check the client I can see it has got the IP and when I check on the DHCP server I can see it has leased an IP.  The DHCP server is set up with split scope scenario i.e two DHCP servers serving from a unique pool of IPs. I do not expect  a problem  because of this but wondering how does Meraki detect DHCP success and whether this is a false alarm.   Client made a request to the DHCP server, but it did not respond. type='NO DHCP response' associated='false' radio='255' vap='3'   Interested in your thoughts. One more thing that confuses me in this best practice guide is how they have calculated the number of APs based on the client count. They are assuming 30/70 % split for 2.4Ghz/5Ghz users but then they calculate the number of users just based on 5Ghz users. Why are they ignoring the 180 2.4Ghz users in this calculation?       ... Thanks Philip for your feedback - Would you say the number of users is per AP or per radio ? MR 18 for example has 2 radios. Would we say it can support total of 25+25 users ? ... View more

Thanks @BlakeRichardson the customer director wants to provide excellent wireless service to the users. They might end up using docking stations for the reasons you mentioned (dual/big screens etc) but for the purpose of this assessment, we need to make sure their wireless deployment can serve all the potential users. So we have got the expceted number of users for each site and their current AP profile from the client and need to assess whether this AP profile (number and make) can cater for the no of users expected? (Ignoring the coverage aspect of it for this discussion which would be covered in survey separately) ... View more

Thanks @cmr . So shall we just take the number of users as a rough guide to calculate the number  of users. i.e if best practice is not to allow more than 25-30 users per AP then we can use that as a limiting factor. Throughput of AP becomes less significant in calculations then. Do you agree? ... View more

Thanks @ww for this. I saw this guide which does look comprehensive but I cannot understand how they got to the value of 101Mbps as AP's total throughput. That bit of the document is confusing. If I want to do the same for MR 18 which is 802.11n with 2x2:2. Does that mean I come to the value of throughput 50Mbps (which is staggering compared to the value of 600Mbps shown in the datasheet)?      ... View more

Meraki Wireless Assessment

Hi I am doing an assessment for a customer who has asked us to evaluate their Meraki wireless setup and make a recommendation whether it has got enough capacity to accomodate all the wireless users they are expecting in a couple of months time. They are replacing desktops with laptops for everyone hence forseeing a lot more usage of wireless than before. While we wont be able to comment on the coverage aspect of it without the survey, how can we make a best possible recommendation based on the data we have got (expected number of users, info from dashboard)?   Linked to the same question, how can we know what is the possible throughput value for any AP in reality (not the one in datasheet as I know that is a theoretical figure)?   Thanks, ...
