Meraki MR Wireless APs Going Offline Randomly

by TokyoKevin in Wireless LAN

Hi.   We have an environment with quite of number of MR44 and MR46 access points. Recently, the access points have been randomly going offline. Sometimes they come back up, but the ones that don't, we have to reset the power to the PoE port on the switch to get them to come back online.   It's not always the same APs, they are randomly going down. The APs are all on the same management VLAN, and can confirm that the VLAN can reach the internet.   This is has never happened before now. None of the other Meraki equipment on the network (Firewall, Switches, Cameras) are losing connectivity.   The MRs are running 27.7.1 firmware. The majority of the APs and Switches have not been rebooted in the past 10 months.   What might be going on here? ... View more

Group Policies Not Working Correctly

Hi Everyone,   I am using IPSK under our SSIDs. Each ISPK has a GPO assigned. The GPOs seem to work ok for assigning the correct VLAN and the bandwidth limits, however we are still experiencing the following issues:   1) The settings under "Security appliance only" under the GPO does not seem to apply to the clients when they connect. On the main Group Policies page, it shows the policy is affecting hundreds of clients, but the section under the "Security appliance only" shows only affecting 20+ clients. Example: I tried to block a URL under this group policy, but the clients can still access. However, if I try to block the URL under Content Filtering under "Security & SD-WAN" it works (but is blocked for everyone).   2) Some clients (particularly MacBooks) seem to stick on the wrong VLAN (and gets the when switching between SSIDs. Doing an IP renew on the client does not help.   We have a single MX, MS core switch stack, and downstream MS switches, with MR access points. We have the same issue whether or not the gateway for the VLAN is on the core switch or on the MX. ... View more

Hi,   We checked, and the country/region is still correct. I will check to see if there are particular DFS channels that seem to have issue. If so, I will try to disable those and re-enable the other ones. I will also disable 40 and 80MHz and leave only 20Mhz, as it is a really dense deployment. ... View more

We did get complaints. Some clients were disconnected but the automatically reconnected. Some others had to reauthenticate.   It's strange. I am seeing DFS events in the logs, but the channel changes are a mix. One AP is changing from 40 to 36, and another is changing from 60 to 136.  (Another changed from 44 to 48, and another from 40 to 52, and another from 100 to 104.)   For now, I have deselected DFS channels from the RF profile, and I have changed the rx-sop to -76. Max transmit power is at 10.   Is there anything else I should check? ... View more

Auto RF channel change - Suddenly on Multiple APs simultaneously

Hi.   Today we had an issue were multiple users were disconnected from the network. When we looked at the logs, we saw that multiple APs (about 25) all had an " Auto RF channel change" logged at exactly the same second.   What could cause this, and how can we prevent it? (Using all WiFi6 APs, 2.4Ghz disabled, high-density deployment >150APs) ... View more

@Ryan_Miles N2F-08-R1-MS355-48-A-1 port 42 for example. As for the APs, I am not sure why they are having issue communicating with the cloud. There are no rules preventing this, and I can ping and resolve hostnames from the tool in the dashboard on the APs. ... View more

Will try to remove that and see what happens.   The other issue is that on all the switch ports where APs are connected, it's showing STP errors in the logs constantly.       Port STP change Port 35 disabled→designated Nov 23 11:51:22     Port status change port: 35, old: down, new: 1Gfdx ... @ww I have not tried to downgrade back to 27.x firmware. Is that something to try?   @Ryan_Miles We removed the VLANs from most of the SSIDs since I was troubleshooting. The one I wanted to focus on mainly was the Guest SSID which has an Guest-PSK ISPK. That should be assigned VLAN 51 for the Guest-GPO, which is defined on the MX. We originally had these VLANs on the MS switches, but we read that the GPs don't really work unless the VLANs are defined on the MX (MX being the gateway). Not sure if this official or not, but thought to try it anyway. ... View more

Issues with Identity Pre-Shared Key (IPSK) without RADIUS on MR44 and MR46 ...

Hi guys.   Running into an issue on our APs. We have Identity Pre-Shared Key (IPSK) without RADIUS configured on our SSIDs, but most devices are having issues connecting. The reason we are using IPSK is because we want to limit the number of SSIDs on the network.   We are in a high-density AP deployment environment, and all APs are on MR 28.5 firmware. We are running mostly MR44 and MR46 APs.   The issue is that Windows machines seem to connect fine [authenticates and gets a DHCP address], but other devices (iPhones, iPads, Android) cannot connect to the network due to DHCP failure (each Identity-PSK is assigned a group policy in which the VLAN is set for wireless). DHCP is running on our MX, and APs are connected with our MS switches. We have checked all the trunk port settings, which seem to be fine (all VLANs are allowed).   The other strange thing is that Macbooks are showing "bad_password" in the Dashboard logs, and are failing to authenticate. Have tried other things like removing splash page settings, rebooting the devices, but nothing works.   Has anyone experienced anything like this?       ... View more

Hi Everyone,   I want to thank you for going into detail about Co-Term and PDL licensing.   With Meraki Support's help, I was able to get a partial solution that gets me back to using the 5 year licenses on each device.   The only remaining issue is that I cannot apply the additional 1 year license because it seems the licenses are already past the initial 90-day window, so they've become active/unused state (already burning even though not assigned). Documentation states that the licenses have to be inactive in order to add the additional time to a device that already has an active license assigned.   As per this link: https://documentation.meraki.com/General_Administration/Licensing/Meraki_Per-Device_Licensing_Overview#Extend_Device_Expiration_Dates_(Renewals)   I think this is an issue with the vendor who sold us the licenses and waited until the last minute to hand them over, so we need to take it up with them, as I don't think support will be able to help on this one.   Regards ... Trying to lean on the vendor from whom we purchased the licenses, but we are also pressed for time. The issue seems to be that for co-term, adding 1 year licenses for the same amount of equipment as 5 year licenses does not equal 6 years, but 3 years. Co-term counted the extra licenses as separate devices and spread the time from initial 5 years across all the devices. I just have a hard time believing that even though we just recieved the licenses and the equipment isn't even online, that Meraki's response is "Sorry, your SoL. Nothing we can do." ... View more

I have a case open, but they are not being helpful.   Long story short, the issue stems from converting from co- termination to per-device licensing. I have no old or expired devices in my organization, and all devices and licences were purchased at the same time with the same length of years for licenses. I should have 6 years for all devices, but only showing 3. Now license center is showing I have 200+ unused licenses for about another 3 years with no way to apply them to existing devices.    I just need someone in support to fix it so that the devices that we purchased are assigned the term length for the licenses that were purchased. I don't understand why this is a hard thing to resolve. I gave all the proof to show what was purchased. ... View more

Hello.   I need to get in contact with someone senior to deal with a licensing issue. We just recently added (2 days ago) licensing, but it is all screwed up.   The dashboard is now showing that we have hundreds of unused licenses that are not applied to our equipment, and we have no way to apply the extra time/licenses to existing equipment.   This is really unacceptable, and if it is not resolved, we will be out tens of thousands of dollars. ... Google Authentication with Group Policies

Hi Everyone.   Looking to use Google Authentication for wireless login. However, I am wondering if it is possible to use this Google authentication method to put users into specific VLANs/Subnets based on their login.   Does anyone have experience with Google login or can let me know if it is possible? (I think it is possible with Radius, but not sure if possible with Google.)   The reason for this is we are trying to limit the number of SSIDs.   Regards ... View more

Hello Everyone,   I'm looking forward to collaborating with everyone hear and looking forward to learning and experiencing new things with Meraki.   I have just today passed the ECMS 500-220 Exam at a PearsonVUE exam center. I work for a systems integrator, and we are planning a huge upcoming Meraki deployment (MX, MS, MR, MV devices) for a school this year. High density AP deployment. Should be fun. ... View more
