Re: Outdoor (MR76) AP signal strength over distance

Great info...   I would say not round coverage but also not super directional.  I did a quick map showing where the AP is installed and the general areas that I need coverage. For reference while looking at the map, that longest of the four arrows is approximately 200 feet.   The BIG red arrow is where the willow tree is.   ... View more

Outdoor (MR76) AP signal strength over distance

Hello.   I have a (10) MR46's indoor and (2) MR76's outdoors. Everything works well except for one of the outdoor MR76's and wondering if I am expecting too much out of it, in terms of signal distance & strength.   There are VERY FEW users on that AP, the ground is basically flat and the only thing in-between the AP and the desired usage areas is a medium sized willow tree.  The desired usage distances are between 120 feet to 200 feet.   I've included a photo of the AP & antennas (of course this is not a photo of it installed; I brought it into my office to look at it closer).   I often time loose connection and need to walk closer to that AP... are my exceptions too much here?   If it's simply a matter of being too far away; do you think the newer MR86 would yield better results?   Thanks!! ... Thank you @DarrenOC    I was slightly mistaken, my Meraki professional DID create a single VLAN, which he named "Data" and he connected the MX100 port 11 to switch#1 (MS350) on port 45 - SEE PHOTO   This is the main rack (rack 1 of 5) and is located in the basement. I call the MS350 directly above the MX100 "Switch-Basement(1)" and it connects to "Switch-Basement(2)" via a 40G Stack Cable in the back.   So I setup additional VLANS per your message but I am confused about my remaining steps regarding ports on the MX100 (ports 2-10).   To keep with baby steps... first let's focus on the IP Camera VLAN - so there would be about a dozen IP cameras and one NAS (that records the streams) that would go onto VLAN 5.  The cameras and NAS do not all connect into these two switches but many do.  The remaining cameras are connected into various other Meraki switches located in different racks.   In addition to the single cable that is in place now, do I also connect a cable between the port 5 on the MX100 and the MS350 too?  If so, where do I connect it (which switch and port). Don't laugh but gotta ask 🙂   I will likely have a few more questions after this but its a fantastic start 🙂   Here's what I have thus far..   My dashboard as of this morning Main Rack (1 of 5) - basement ... Prior to Meraki, I had about a dozen IP cameras (indoor & outdoor).  They were all made by Axis Communications (they make outstanding cameras).   After implementing Meraki last month, I decided to also buy a handful of Meraki cameras to evaluate.   I can say that the Meraki cameras were the only Meraki products I do NOT like. Primarily because of the big delay (I get about a 8-12 second delay when local) and for some camera locations, that is a total deal killer. The other thing I hate is having to use a browser/dashboard to view my Meraki cameras.   However with the RTSP feature in the Meraki camera beta version, I can view (and record) my Meraki cameras WITHIN my QNAP QVR Pro security software, right along side my Axis cameras - and get this... the delay is GONE!!!!!!!!   There is a bug in the beta version (the stream works, then freezes, then works, then freezes... to infinity) but I am sure they will sort that out. ... VoIP and IP Security Cameras: VLANs /Subnets

Good evening,   I am so amazed by the level of help I’ve received from this community; thank you.   I am going to, again, ask for your suggestions on a few things but first, I think I should mention that my Meraki system is installed in my home, not a business (in case it helps with your response to my questions).   About me – I am mildly techie but I am not an IT professional like you all and Meraki is my first real network; so much of what I have read in the forums is over my head, so please keep that in mind too 😉   My Meraki system was installed on June 15th and other than a couple of remaining gremlins (mostly Crestron related), everything is working with everything on one subnet (192.168.1.x) and no VLANs. We decided to go this route to simply just get everything working, and then we would look at things like subnets, VLANS, etc.   So now I am ready to begin looking at best practices for security, ease of use & performance and at the same time I do like the KISS principal & I don’t want to needlessly make things overly complex if they don’t need to be.   Here’s my hardware overview: Internet = (1) 450 Mbps service from Charter Spectrum Router = (1) Meraki MX100 with the Advanced license Switch = (2) Meraki MS350-48, stacked with 40G cable Switch = (2) Meraki MS350-24 Switch = (2) Meraki MS120-8 AP = (10) Meraki MR46 (wifi-6) AP = (2) Meraki MR76 (wifi-6) Cameras = (3) Meraki IP cameras being tested now for consideration* Cameras = (12) Axis IP cameras in use Sec Storage = (1) QNAP NAS (65TB usable RAID-10) + QVR Pro Security Software Music Streamers = (23) Linn DSM network music streamers VoIP = (12) VoIP phones (make/model TBD)   Usage = Typical family of 5-6 usage (just a larger than normal house) and the only things that are not typical are:   the number of security cameras running 24x7 the number of music streamers VoIP phones several times a year, I host large fundraiser events than could have 200-300 present (it will be interesting to see how the Meraki Guest Network handles the next event lol).   I am evaluating VoIP phones right now and planning to implement something very quickly. I’ve read it is important to put them on their own VLAN, but that’s all I know. And I don’t know how to do it.   I've read I may want to also consider putting the IP cameras on their VLAN too but I don’t know how to do it.   Not sure about the various Crestron products that I have and if they should be on their own too or not.   So much to think about, that it’s overwhelming to me… however this community helped me get my Linn music streamers working; thanks again for that help!!   * more on this later but the only Meraki product I don't like are the cameras but with a new feature in the beta version, this make turn me into a Meraki camera fan ... TFTP Server for macOS Catalina ?

by MrBear in Security / SD-WAN

‎07-02-2020 09:15 AM
Hello,   I just purchased two Cisco 8841 VoIP phones to experiment with (to determine if I want to replace my current system with VoIP phones).  I am using a hosted service called Phone.com   My Meraki gear is: MX100, MS350 switches, Meraki WiFi-6 AP's   Even though I would eventually have a dozen or so Cisco 8841 VoIP phones, there would rarely be more than two people using the phone system at one time and those conversations are always less than 60-seconds.   I was reading some Meraki documentation, and it sounds like I need software running "TFTP Server" on a computer on my network. Most everything I've seen is for Windows PC's but I am all Mac here.   Typically, VoIP equipment will get a dynamic configuration from a TFTP server or other service on the network. This will commonly be levied by a DHCP server, where leases to VoIP endpoints will include voice-specific DHCP options. In the event that the phone fails to connect to the network/get a working configuration, consider the following recommended steps:   If a separate voice VLAN is being used, ensure that phones are being put on the appropriate VLAN by means of an access port, voice VLAN configuration on the port, or even configured on the phone itself. If this is being done, ensure that a DHCP server is up-and-running on that VLAN, and configured with the appropriate scope and options. If phones have a working IP configuration on the network (or a static assignment is given for test purposes) and are told to get their VoIP configuration from some other server, ensure that the server is online and reachable from the voice VLAN.   https://documentation.meraki.com/zGeneral_Administration/Tools_and_Troubleshooting/VoIP_on_Cisco_Meraki%3A_F.A.Q._and_Troubleshooting_Tips   Anyone have experience with this? ... It was just two weeks ago, that my first Meraki system was installed.  I only have a very rudimentary knowledge of how to use my Meraki system and was nervous about getting all my Linn Music Streamers working; but with the help of those mentioned, we got it going.   Thanks for the recognition and kind words. 😊 ... My first Meraki system was installed a couple of weeks ago (love it) but I am still figuring things out.   The Need: I have all Axis cameras but one of them, which is pointed at my aquarium, needs to be viewable by my "fish guy"   Is there a safe & easy way to him to view my Axis camera from outside the LAN?    Thanks   ... Hi everyone. Thanks for all your help thus far and I would like to provide a bit of an update on things I've tried and some additional info I found regarding resolving this issue on a Cisco Switch...   Today I went to Meraki Dashboard/Switch/Configure/Switch Settings and disabled IGMP Snooping.  Shortly thereafter, I finally could see all the music streamers (Linn DSM's) inside the music player app (Linn Kazoo). Bottom line is it worked but I did reset it to the Meraki default setting of "Enabled".   The reason I re-Enabled it again is because this is NOT what the manufacturer recommends, because the resulting Multicast traffic may cause the AP's to be overloaded.   So naturally I am concerned about the possible addition of large amounts of Multicast traffic by going this route as a "fix" to my problem (we are talking 20+ music streamers on the network).   Whilst disabling IGMP Snooping did allow me to see ALL the streamers like I should, I think disabling IGMP Snooping as a fix, will causes a new issue to arise, if I am using an optional feature within the streamer, called “Songcast”. What is Songcast??? Linn Songcast allows you to share the Music playing on one Linn DSM with other Linn DSM's on the same computer network.   One example of how I would use that feature is: We are having a large gathering of people, and we want the music to play & sound seamless when guests flow from room, to room, to room, to room, etc.   Whilst Songcasting, Linn DSM players generate significant amounts of Multicast traffic on the network. Many consumer grade network switches, including many all-in-one router/switch/WAP units will broadcast this Multicast traffic to ALL devices on the network, rather than just those which have requested it.   The Solution??? The network traffic must be filtered to ensure that Multicast traffic is not sent over the wireless network… This uses a process known as IGMP Snooping   I just found a Linn support document that shows what settings to use if you have a Cisco SG300 switch… so maybe I just need to emulate the settings shown for the Cisco SG300 onto Meraki? Could you please read the Cisco document I am attaching, and then tell me if you think emulating those setting onto Meraki is recommended?… if so, I may need some help finding things within Meraki and how to make necessary changes  😊 ... Hi  Maclanta   I now see I didn't do a very good job of explaining "what" the problem is that I have.   Pre-Meraki:  When using the App (Linn Kazoo) and looking at the drop-down list of all the rooms that have the streamers located (there are 21 in total),  I would see all 21 rooms and can choose whichever room & play music in that room.   Post-Merak:  I am no longer seeing all 21 rooms (aka streamers) but only a small subset.  Then if I go to a different floor or area of the property, I will see a different small subset of rooms.  As a matter of fact, I was in a different area I have not been since the install and I saw ZERO rooms available.  So in my very limited experience, it kinda sound like a discovery issue maybe?   My limited understand of multicast in the Linn world, I "think" is when one optionally uses a feature called "Songcast" and that basically links which ever room(s) (or all rooms) that you select, to all play the same music, in perfect synchronization in all of the "selected" rooms.  An example of how to use this optional feature is:  You are having a large gathering of people, and you want the music to play & sound seamless when people flow from room to room to room.   Here is another copy/past of Linn info and then a link too, if you don't mind taking a read   Thank you 🙂   Managed Switches Make sure they are programmed to work in Layer-2 mode   Jumbo packet/frames networking This is not an official standard and is not supported by the Linn DS/DSM.   Multicast or Unicast If you are using more than six Linn DS/DSM products in the same network and want to share/Songcast the music to other rooms then make sure the LAN can support Multicasting. If you have issues with your Routers check: QoS is turned OFF (some Routers do not implement this consistantly and this may block Linn DS discovery). If you have a simple network with Unmanaged switches, turn "IGMP Snooping" - OFF otherwise check IGMPv2 and IGMPv3 is supported. On BTHomeHubs turn "Extended UPnP security" - OFF On DLINK, within "Advanced", Multicast Streams - ENABLE   https://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Multicast_Filtering ... View more

Linn Music Streamers and Meraki

Good evening,   I just replaced my Cisco network with an all Meraki network.  I have a large number of Linn music streamers but things are not working correctly on Meraki.  If it matters, I have a MX100.   I found the following information from the manufacturer (Linn) but I do not know how to check Meraki's setting nor how to make any changes if needed... anyone care to help out a first week newb?   Services, ports, protocols: The Services, ports and protocols are used by the Linn app and players in the network   UPnP & SSDP (Linn DS/DSM discovery and control) Port 1900 (UDP) Port 2869 (TCP), Ports 49152-65535 (both TCP & UDP)   LPEC (Linn Products Event Control) Port 23 (TCP)   mDNS (Bonjour) IPV4 224.0.0.251 port 5353 (UDP)   DHCP Ports 67, 68 (UDP)   ODP (OpenHome Device Protocol) TCP on an ephemeral port   ------------------------------------ A bit more on my network. In addition to the MX100, I also have several Meraki switches and about a dozen Meraki AP's.     At this moment, I have everything on 192.168.1.x  (though this will likely change once we sort everything out.   All the Linn streamers connect via wired ethernet but all the devices that run the player software (Linn Kazoo) is WiFi.   The Linn streamers are "working" (sort of) right now... I cannot explain why, but it seems like depending on which Meraki AP I am connected to, will dictate which Linn Streamers I can see displayed in Kazoo (before Meraki, I could see all of them no matter where I was on property).   https://docs.linn.co.uk/wiki/index.php/Linn_DS/DSM_Network_requirements   ...
