My personal preference is to keeps things simple, until you can't. Planning a current network design based future maybes (not hard requirements) can increase cost, complication and reliability, without any direct benifit today. So my suggestion would be to set up the simplest design first, and plug the two WAN ports into the MX. Later, when you eventually (hopefully) get a warm spare, a more complex configuration is required. Just be sure you do not move your single point of failure from a firewall to a switch. ... We have an MX HA pair at each site and a stack of physical switches that they connect to.  We cable one MX to one switch and the other MX to one of the other switches.  Therefore if either MX fails you still have a connection to the switch stack.  Equally if the switch connected to the active MX fails, the other MX takes over and as it is linked to a remaining working switch, you still have a connection.  Worst case where you get a partial failure on a switch, as the MXs are connected to the dashboard via the WAN ports, you can force a failover. ... The consensus seems to be 2x unmanaged switch solution to avoid the awkward MS120 mgmt and remove the single point of failure.    @BogoMips You might be onto something here - I think my MS120-8 had a statically assigned IP from my ISP, which I then also gave to MX1 later on. Not sure how long the lease is for, but this could explain it.  ... View more
