@PhilipDAththat's interesting. I usually use the event to track when my old boss gets into Dashboard and reboots the AP that he is connected to because it's 'slow'. Just before my first post I searched for the event and it brought up everyone one of my APs in a particular network that had firmware updated/reboot this past weekend.

@MacElster usually if I want to see if an AP has rebooted, I search for the event 'Ethernet port carrier change' in the event log. Would that work for you?

It seems that a third of our APs in this building were pinned to an old firmware case. I had no idea and was never told these particular APs were ever pinned as part of the case. Anyways, once these APs were updated to my current MR24.12 firmware and then the stable candidate MR25.9 early Saturday morning, any AP/client floods have disappeared. It's also worth mentioning that the high utilization/jammed channels that I was also experiencing in another building on the same campus have also disappeared as well.

Sorry @ww I should have included that in my post. Yes this AP came back up on the same channel. Right now the AP is serving 0 clients on 2.4. In the RF tab on the AP page, I have 4 events since the reboot and they are all to decrease transmit power on the 2.4 radio. It looks like in the past 2 hours, max utilization is 9.3% with 1.7% of that being non-802.11 interference.

Thanks for all of the info on the Chromecasts. I sent those links over to our Wireless Support Team for awareness. I have a few in the environment but have a hard time tracking them down in my client list. I am still trying to learn more about RF properties and behaviors so maybe someone else knows the answer. When I reboot an AP with a high usage channel, the channel usage then drops down to 1-2% upon reboot. When an AP reboots, what would cause the channel utilization to drop to almost nothing? One AP in question was not serving any clients when I noticed the high utilization and then rebooted. In layman's terms it sees like something was 'stuck' but I am sure there is more to it than that.

@PhilipDAththanks for replying. Right now I have 3 SSIDs broadcasting on all APs with the bitrate is set to 12Mbps with bandsteering. Another odd thing is between 8p last night and 3a this morning, there was one client connected and usage was 95%. The AP had 5 channel changing events during that time. This is an office with normal business hours so any clients that were around and connected to the wifi were an iPad or two that was sitting on someone's desk. Just looked at the logs for RF events and I must have something in the environment that is causing havoc. This building has around 1000 mobile clients and I have seen some devices that need 2.4 such as the Chromecast and some contractor laptops that for some reason will only use 2.4 instead of 5.

Last week I was looking through the RF Spectrum section and realized I had a number of APs on a first floor of one of our office building that were all experiencing high to jammed 2.4 channels. Looking at the RF tab for a specific AP, I see high utilization on 2.4 but only have one client connected for just a portion of the timeline and extremely low usage. Today I am seeing the same thing on some APs that are serving zero clients. After a reboot, the channel that was jammed is now down to almost nothing and the majority of the utilization (before reboot) was 802.11 traffic. I know there are all sorts of things that can cause interference in the 2.4 but most - like microwaves - are stationery and I would think would interfere with the AP after the reboot. But this isn't the case. Is there anything with the AP itself that would cause the current channel to be jammed until a reboot?

I agree. I swear Apple Support had an article on the issue but maybe not. I did however find an article that talks about this. Most times we would have to track these iPads down based on what user was assigned to that device and make them unlock their device. If they had forgotten the password (which was usually the case), we would have to use Apple Configurator to wipe the device. I definitely hated telling a user that his/her iPad had to be wiped but that was the consequence for shoving it a drawer and not using it. Our trainers who are in our care centers all over the US got so bad that we had to stick them on a pooled cellular plan because we got so tired of shipping an iPad across the US multiple times. I know that's probably the last answer you wanted to hear. I tried looking for the Apple article that I saw about this 'issue' but I've not found it yet.

Our organization has a ton of iPads that are used in by our users and oftentimes not used much. More time than I can count, these iPads are turned off for a period of time and lose wifi until the screen is unlocked. This is a feature of iOS devices and seen as a security thing I believe. The wifi connection sits behind the login and will not enable until the device is unlocked. I am not sure if there is anything that can alleviate this issue. We have dealt with it for the entire time I was in Wireless Support.

@mattr12xI had this happen to me right after the Storage Service issue. Support had me go to whatever Network/SSID that was giving me an issue, and create a splash page using whichever official theme I was not using. I use the Fluid theme so I selected Modern and saved it. I accessed the splash page on a device to verify my changes were there - they were. I was then told to flip back to the Fluid theme and verify the changes were there. Everything was good again. Support said my splash might have been stuck after the data loss event.

@Nagesh- Yea @HodyCrouch is right. Clients with group policies will show in the list regardless of when they last connected. In one of my networks I can see some clients with group policies that were last seen in October.

@mike318Networks that are combined networks won't show up in the drop-down for the Configuration sync tool. The majority of my networks are combined and the only networks that show up in the tool are my MX-only networks.

@Tung_NguyenCorrect, 13.25 is beta. Originally I went to beta on my MX400s to resolve an issue with some erroneous content filtering and have been on betas ever since. The 13.27 beta resolves an issue with a rare case of MX400/600s rebooting, which is what my 400 has done, but Support says my case is not the one identified in 13.27. So far my MX issue has not reappeared since 11/27 and has seemed to have 'broken the cycle'.

@Tung_NguyenWhat firmware version are you running? I am running 13.25 and did not have to enable anything to get the utilization graph to show. I had to send Support a screenshot of the graph because they didn't know what I was referring to when I referenced the MX utilization. Maybe it hasn't made its way to the stable release yet.

For this network there have been no major changes in usage or number of clients. The only major change is the firmware which was updated 3 days before all of these spikes started happening. I don't have any sort of load balancing and device util this year has been under 25%. This is my busiest 400 of the 3. Here is a screenshot of the utilization covering last Friday thru Sunday. The drop off is when the MX decided to reboot itself.

Device utilization is on the Summary Report page although I only see that measurement for the MX400s. I believe it was introduced in firmware back in June since I went back this thru the year to see if I ever had these spikes before.

@PhilipDAthI am talking about device utilization on the MX itself. My upgrade window for this network is Monday's at 2am. I did not know that about the firmware upgrade loop, I will get back with Support to check that. I just sent a reply back to them about this never happening until the latest beta which I am only running because a beta last year fixed an issue with content filtering denying access to credible/safe domains. Maybe the upgrade loop is what is happening. The MX keeps trying to update and thus gets pushed to 100% utilization. Also, maybe the MX showing a speedtest of 30M on a 200M circuit is because the poor thing is just sputtering along until it finally reboots itself. Thanks for the info!

I've got a weird issue going on here and I have opened a case with Meraki and so far they are stumped. I am running the latest beta on 3 MX400s but an only have this issue on one MX. Since the upgrade to 13.25, this MX utilization will start to creep up towards 100%. Usually on Saturday night, the utilization hits 100%, the MX reports the WAN uplink has failed (which it hasn't) and throttles my bandwidth from 200M down to around 30M. I have verified this myself as I came into the office last Sunday to call Support so they could troubleshoot the MX in a failed state. I usually find this on Monday morning and reboot so everyone is happy again. The very odd thing is that while on the phone with Support Sunday, the MX rebooted itself almost like it knew it was struggling . Prior to the firmware upgrade, this MX never got above 25% utilization and another MX with comparable traffic usage/device count doesn't come close to 25% while running this latest beta. My Meraki networks are air-gapped from production traffic so mostly iPads and iPhones are on the network and almost none are in the building on the weekends when things go haywire. I just spent some time going back through summary reports back to when the 400 was able to show device utilization (June) and am pretty certain it is something in the 13.25 beta build that is not liking this particular MX. Has anyone else had an issue like this?

All of our Meraki gear is for our internal wireless and managed in-house so I keep forgetting about the client's perspective on everything. But yes, a smartphone acting as a hotspot would be a great idea.

In every MX we are using a Verizon USB card with an antenna that I've tried to mount as high up as I can go. All of the cards are on a M2M pooled plan so it doesn't cost a ton each month to keep them active. The backups have helped me many times in the past when a circuit has went down for maintenance or network issues. Some sites I ran solely on a cellular card until the fiber circuit was dropped in and ready. I only have one site that needs the antenna mounted higher as the cellular connection is a bit flaky. It is nice too if a MX flips to cellular, I know it's a circuit issue, but if the MX goes hard down then I know it's a power issue or in one case specifically, the MX kicked the bucket. RIP MX70.

I'm not on our Support team team anymore that manages our devices thru the MDM, but when we cleared the passcode on a device with Touch ID enabled, it would clear the passcode and then turn off Touch ID. I don't think I ever had any issues with the device receiving the command unless their cellular connection was spotty. Some times it seemed to take forever for the command to be received and we would just cancel and try again. From a user perspective, you can never clear a passcode fast enough.

@rraglin- Yes you can create/push all kinds of profiles with the Meraki MDM. Here is some great info on creating profiles - https://documentation.meraki.com/SM/Profiles_and_Settings/Configuration_Profiles. For non-cellular devices, you'll just need to make sure they have some sort of connection with the MDM if you want to push the profiles remotely via Dashboard.

When I started with my company, I was very green in terms of networking. The first few weeks I just read KB articles and poked around at everything in Dashboard. It's really the only thing I know when it comes to networking as I haven't dealt that much (yet) with command line stuff. I've pretty much been the sole person to manage the wifi at all of our locations and the ease of Meraki has allowed that. That being said, I am fighting to keep Meraki in our work place. Our test environment for the DOT1X is almost up and running so we'll see how our architect feels after a POC!

Today, our Meraki wireless network is air-gapped from our production network. Associates HATE having to VPN back into the network if they're on wifi just to get access to network resources. We just finished integration ClearPass as our NAC solution on the wired side and now have begun to integrate CP on the wireless side. One of our network architects wants to look at using another vendor because of their documented and easier CP integration. He also thinks Meraki isn't that robust on an enterprise level. We have a ton of Meraki equipment at over 12 sites around the country and the thought of swapping everything out makes me cringe. Has anyone tied ClearPass into Meraki and was it harder or easier than you originally thought? I am hoping that once we get a working model in a test environment, our architect will be surprised that Meraki is more robust than he thought and he will not want to jump ship for another vendor.
