"AP unable to handle additional clients"

We suddenly got reports from a few sites about clients unable to connect to our wireless, and those who are connected get fairly lousy performance. I just noticed the new "Assurance" tab in the GUI, and when I peeked in the Analytics section there I saw quite a few association errors caused by "AP unable to handle additional clients" - this even on sites with relatively low number of users.

Googling the term came up with nothing - anyone know what could be at play here?

Sounds like some kinds of bug. Did you try latest firmware? 30.7.1

Never seen that error but looks like :"Code 17 Association denied because AP is unable to handle additional associated stations

Will happen if you run out of AIDs on the AP; so try associating a large number of stations."

What model of access point are you using and do the devices have a decent connection to the access points?

Have you upgraded firmware or made any other recent changes?

How many APs are at these locations?
Are the APs in close proximity to one another?
Are you applying one RF profile to all APs at those locations or does each AP have its own RF profile?
I've seen this behavior when one RF profile was assigned to all APs in close proximity.

Just got off the phone with Meraki support, was advised to disable Client balancing on the RF profile which could cause issues if the APs are close to each other (I'm not too sure about the layout on this particularily troubled site, but there's never been a wireless survey done there, that's for sure). There are just 3 MR42 APs running 30.7, scheduled for upgrade to 30.7.1 next weekend.

"AP unable to handle additional clients" is just the slightly misleading alert shown when clients are bounced off of an AP due to the client balancing, I was told.

We turned off client balancing as a work around and errors are gone. Meraki Support has our case still in progress, it is uncertain what is going on. Possibly a BUG... I'm just speculating.

There's definitely been a recent update to the Alert types displayed in Organization > Alerts but I can't find the announcement for when that happened

We are seeing the same "AP unable to handle additional clients" with some of our wireless clients, and we do have APs closer than necessary. It looks like this is addressed in Firmware 31.1.1, with the stable release candidate currently being 31.1.5.1. Has anyone tried the 31.1.X firmware versions?
