Wireless Throughput and speed test

Hi all

we have an issue with wireless throughput and speed test .

we have 4 AP ( Mr53) that they are connected to a Ms 220 . the uplink speed is 100Mbps .

when i plug my laptop straight to MS  switch my speed test is about 93Mbps and is fine .

the Mr access points have a throughput of about 87Mbps .

BUT ....

when i connect to Mr access point , the speed test is maximum about 20Mbps .!?!???

 

the Mr RF profile are in Auto ( channel and power both ) .

 

is there anybody can help about this !

How are you powering the MR53?

 

The PoE version of the MS220 offiers 802.3af.  The MR53 needs 802.3at power.  If you are powering the MR53 from the MS220 it will retard its performance to live within the power restriction.

thanks for your reply.

i even used a individual separate power charger  ( a power source of 12VDC 2.5A ) . but with the same result .

the speed test with AP is still low.

i checked again the MR53 datasheet and saw the recommendation about the POE :

Power over Ethernet: 37 - 57 V (802.3at required; functionality-restricted 802.3af mode supported).
 

interestingly one the MR53 AP got this standard (802.3at) but the speed test is very low.

however with an external power supply another MR53 AP got the 802.3af with low power mode message but the speed test is very high.

How are you running the speed test? Why are you only getting 100Mbps? I thought the MS220 had 1Gbps ports?

 

I'm assuming you have no other WiFi devices connected while running the speed test?

 

Are you on the same VLAN when doing the wired and wireless tests?

 

First thing I would be checking on your wireless device is the signal strength, noise and the SNR.

 

Then what channels your Meraki has chosen to use, do they interfere with other APs, what is the channel width, etc.

 

Then I'd check the MCS rate you're receiving.

 

There could also be some non-802.11 interference which will degrade your performance.

 

What kind of device are you using to test? The above is supper easy to check on a Mac but can be harder on Windows. I'll try to set you through it if need be.

This is my understanding. Either of the methods used for testing the throughput is wired. (93 and 87 Mbps).

 

20 Mbps is when you do the test via Wifi.

Can you verify the following.

1. Laptop Wireless Lan card. Is it b/g/n/ac?

2. Connected band. 2.4 / 5 Ghz.

3. Distance from the AP

4. Do the same test on few more devices.

5. I hope you have not created any group policy capping the speed.

 

Also I understand achieving Wired Throughput on Wireless seems to be difficult.

I looked at my own network:

 

Both the MR30H and MR33 have the same PoE Adapter (Linksys) but:

the MR30H has PoE 803.3at and a throughput of 46 Mbps.

the MR33   has PoE 803.3af with only 12 Mbps throughput.

 

Is there a way to "force" the MR33 to also choose 803.at (which would improve the speed). 

Distance tot the gateway (MR42) is for both almost the same.

i tried two frequencies ( 2.4 and 5 Ghz ) combined and separately.

distances i test was vary from 1m to 20 .

it was tested by different devices.

and there is no group policy .
