Wireless IP and Misconfigured DNS

Good Afternoon.

We are seeing an ongoing error on some of our APs. The error is telling us we have a misconfigures DNS but these APs have the same exact configuration as the rest of the APs. Any ideas on what could be the cause?

Thanks in Advance!

Ed

This usually indicates that your Meraki device isn't receiving responses to its DNS requests, preventing it from resolving dashboard URLs and other internet addresses.

Try using a different DNS server IP address to see if the issue persists.

Just out of curiosity, do you have a firewall that might be restricting something?

Hi @alemabrahao

Thanks for responding, we do have a Meraki MX between the APs and the Internet but all of our APs are on the same VLAN/Subnet and have open access out to the web.

Were you able to test with another DNS server?

I change them one one of our APs from Google to Cloudflare. Lets see how that does.

I would suggest using the tools tab under the AP's settings to ping Googles DNS and see if you get a response.

So yeah we are getting dropped packets on the couple I tested even with the Cloudflare DNS configured. These are all new cables runs, 38 total. What I am seeing as well is even though I have static LAN IPs on the APs the Summary tab shows it as DHCP and the DNS isn't updated.

**Updated**

Did a cable test on all the APs on 1 floor and all came back ok.

Is the MX your DHCP and DNS server or is it something else?

How can the DNS be updated if you have statics? the DNS is handed out as option 6 of the DHCP accept... If it is the MX remove the proxy to upstream and designate the servers by IP here. if its not the MX set your MX to ignore DHCP traffic on the AP mgmt.

Also make sure that you aren't inadvertently blocking something with ACLs or group policies....

Hi @TBHPTL

Our MX is our DHCP and it is set to use Google from that drop down list. On the AP, I have set a static IP but it want to keep using the DHCP address. Normal network configuration disables DHCP if you use a static IP. Is this different for these APs? So in order to have the APs use the defined static IPs I need to disable the DHCP service on the MX? I read that Meshing needs to have DHCP enabled so I have since disabled Meshing and they are still using DHCP.

Out of 38 APs, we have an average of 2 or 3 APs at any given time disconnected and saying Misconfiguration of DNS. Then we have about 5 or so APs that never have this issue. All are on the same subnet/vlan and all have the same IP settings, static and using manual DNS servers for Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1. Originally they used the Google option in the DNS dropdown. I didn't cable tests on all the AP connection and they all came back as OK.

Hope this helps to clarify more.
