SSIDs per AP. ( require 4 but documentation says 3)

I have read the

https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/WiFi_Basics_and_Best_Practices/Multi-SSID_Deployment_Considerati...

I currently have  3 SSID.  They reside on every AP.

A Guest ( own VLAN)

Existing Internal. ( uses PSK) ( own VLAN)

Legacy.  ( for 2.4hghz devices.) (own VLAN) (uses PSK).

I am in the process of bringing up a radius solution with WPA2 Enterprise.

Is the 3 SSID a valid HARD limit?

ANy suggestions are appreciated as allways

Hi ,

It is only a recommendation :

Below are our general recommendations when deploying multiple SSIDs on a single physical AP:

  • No more than 3 SSIDs should be enabled on any single AP.

It will depend on your number of APs, but I think it's a good number, also check the  WiFi SSID Overhead Calculator:

can this be done in the dashboard?

No, This is just a recommendation. For more details, we would have to go into RF theory. But from experience, I recommend not using more than 4 SSIDs.

It's a recommendation that a maximum of 3 SSID's are used. Enabling more than that can introduce interference and performance issues.

I believe the hard maximum is 15 SSID's per network.

@JED2021 the recommendation is no more than 3 SSIDs per radio per AP.  As you have one 2.4GHz only then for 5GHz you'll be within recommended limits.  We often run as many as 6 SSIDs per AP (though some are only either 2.4GHz or 5GHz so the most active is 5 per radio) and don't see any issues in real life.

We use 4 SSIDs everywhere... And on some APs even 5 SSIDs.

So far, no problems. And got a good amount of devices within the locations/networks.
