mGbe RJ45 Ports

Hey!

Does anyone know if the mGbe ports available on specific MS models are backwards compatible?

For example, if a 2.5g port connected to a 5g port, would they still communicate, albeit capped at 2.5g?

Similarly, could a 5g port communicate with a regular 1g port?

Thanks!

Hi @SeanGr , correct, they are backwards compatible.  You’re not just tied to the advertised rate.  I have mgig switches deployed where we’ve had to use some of the mgig ports for older equipment. Waste of a port I know but sometimes you don’t have a choice

Getting noticed

Hey @SeanGr, most MS mGbe ports are generally backwards compatible with older Ethernet standards. We've successfully utilized this compatibility to integrate some older equipment on our network.

The main limitation is that their minimum operating speed is 100Mb/s.  No more 10 Mb/s support.
