Port mirror

When you set a port mirror . Do the port need to be next to each other ? Also if one port is already active You can't mirror it. I would have two ports empty and set the mirror.

Thank you for any help,

There is no requirement for source and destination mirror ports physical proximity, beyond they must be in the same switch or stack.

On a classic MS switch you can choose any other port on the same switch as destination port (except stacking ports of course).

On Catalyst based switch at the very least you will be able to send captures to different switches too.
