Meraki MS225-24P-HW - license requirement

Howdy.  We are looking at purchasing a refurbished MS225-24P-HW from Amazon. It's described a 'Unclaimed' - No License'.  Does that mean we need a license for it to work? We don't necessarily need 'management'.   What if any would the  license options, part numbers be given that?    As far as connecting to another 10 gig switch or computer 10 gig NIC's what type of cable do we need? We realize this is an old unit but it is perfect for our purposes  - 24 ports with 4 10 gig SFP+ ports - exactly what we need to replace a CISCO SG300-28P.  However if there is a new unit with similar specs please provide part number and we will check if we have the budget for it.

Thanks in advance for your attention to this.

Buying a refurbished unit comes with risk regarding 1.) if it works and 2.) if it is truly unclaimed.

Yes - a license is required and they come in 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 year durations:

LIC-MS225-24P-1YR

LIC-MS225-24P-3YR

LIC-MS225-24P-5YR

LIC-MS225-24P-7YR

LIC-MS225-24P-10YR

The 10Gig SFP will depend if you are doing multi-mode, single mode, etc:
MA-SFP-10GB-SR
MA-SFP-10GB-ER
MA-SFP-10GB-LR
MA-SFP-10GB-ZR

I'd encourage you to look at the MS130-24X or the MS150 series as they are both "newer" units with a bit more longevity down the road.

MS130 Datasheet
MS150 Datasheet

At some point MS225 series will become EOS/EOL.

I personally would not recommend buying a refurbished unit.

As mentioned by @RWelch - you run the risk of buying an expensive doorstop.  Even if the device is unclaimed should you hit a hardware issue the warranty is bound to the initial purchaser so you’ll struggle with support.

Would always recommend purchasing new from a reseller.
