Switching Lights on and off with PoE switch port and MT30 button

Hi all

I am busy developing a product where I pull power from the PoE port of a switch and then convert it to 12V DC with a light on the other end.

I then want to use the MT30 button to switch the lights on and off by switching the particular port on and off.

Would you be interested in something like this?

I think its especially useful for remote areas where there are high sites and containers and you need light.

Depending on the Wattage of the port you can easily put 3 or 4  5Watt LEDs on one port

There definitely seems to be a valid use case for these types of lighting systems, especially as they can benefit from all the positive aspects provided by PoE power delivery. We are talking with our Meraki Partners and Cisco engineers around POE lighting for a new build we have that's happening in the next 18months.
This is a huge topic at the moment. We have issues with trying to get the MT30 to power on and off Wireless AP, especially when they are shut by Port Schedules. 

This will be an interesting topic over the coming months/years. Definitely going to be a money spinner.

Hi there

I managed to get a 5Watt 12Volt light to light up via a PoE port on a Meraki switch. I used  a PoE splitter in the middle to get this to work. I have not had the time or energy to play around with the button. Maybe I will pursue this again next year. But in theory if you have this type of set up with a PoE splitter in the middle then you should be able to switch that particular port (or group of ports) on and off.

If Meraki can create something seamless then it will be great!

I like this clever thinking although it also means another job given to IT when office lights stop working.....

That depends. We work closely with our facilities teams, hopefully all the lighting and cabling termination will all be mapped out. Should be fairly straight forward from then on.
