Windows Tray NCSI Shows Yellow ! and No Internet Access - LIES!

Network is running through a MX84 firewall, There is a local DC that runs Windows DHCP and DNS for network, Windows clients show yellow triangle with exclamation point on network connection status indicator (NCSI) in system tray by clock, but internet connectivity works fine. If I do an IPCONFIG /RELEASE then /RENEW, the NCSI yellow indicator goes away for a while, but it always comes back. This seemed to have started happening about the time the MX84 went in. Any chance this is related to AMP/ID/IP of the MX84? I figured I would ask before digging into DNS settings on the DC to see what may be going on there (I scanned it quick, but did not see anything amiss). Thanks in advance!

Do you have any other clients connected via the MX having the same issue?

 

I’ve had this in the past, Windows 10 machine going out via an MX64. From memory the issue cleared when I switched DNS. I was initially using the upstream providers DNS then moved to Google DNS. Now using Umbrella.

 

Are both (I assume) DNS servers reachable?

Yes, it seems to be happening on any of the machines pointing to our internal DNS server. I'm starting to suspect that the problem is either the outgoing DNS requests from that server, or just the server configuration itself. Bothersome though that it appears to have started when the MX was installed.

I switched one PC out from using the local DNS to using Google DNS and have not had the "!" come back... hmmm. At least I know it's something to do with the local DNS server and maybe the MX84.

All of my clients are behind a MX.  The clients with AD and an internal DNS server are not having that issue.

 

I have the MX handling DHCP and setting the DNS addresses to the internal DNS server and to Google.
