Warmspare for 2DCs physically separated

Hello,

For my SD-WAN project, the client has two physically separated data centers connected via a Level 2 link. Can I place an MX in each data center and use Warm Spare with a single license for both MX units? If so, what are the potential drawbacks of this solution?

Only one license is required for an HA pair. The warm spare unit does not require a separate license. Alerts for Warm spare failover can be configured on the Alerts and Administration page.“

You can, but if the single L2 link fails, both will go master/master, so there is little redundancy.  You might have to manually intervene during a failure and turn off one of the MXs (which is also an acceptable DR method if it is part of your plan).

You could consider getting a pair of L2 circuits (ideally channelled together) for redundancy.
