Move network device to another network using API

Hi!

I need to move almost 300 network devices (switches and APs) from one network to multiple different networks.

Using the API I can backup and restore the configuration that is lost when moving them, but I have not found any documentation about doing the actual move using API.

To clarify, I want to use API to perform this procedure: Moving Non-MX Devices between Networks

Is it me, or is it not possible to do with API?

Hi @RobAce

You can use the following API's to move the Meraki Nodes from one network to another within the same organization.

Dear @RobAce,

Moving non-MX devices (like switches and access points) between networks using the Meraki API is not straightforward, as the API does not provide a direct method for this operation. However, you can follow a general approach to facilitate the process:

Backup Configuration: Use the API to backup the configuration of each device before moving them. This ensures you have a copy of the settings that will be lost during the move.

Move Devices Manually: Currently, the Meraki API does not support moving devices directly between networks. You will need to manually remove devices from the original network and then add them to the new network through the dashboard or API. Note that removing a device will erase its existing configuration on that network15.

Reapply Configuration: After moving the devices, you can use the API to restore their configurations from the backup you created earlier. This involves applying the saved settings back to the devices in their new location.

Consider Automation Tools: There are third-party tools like Boundless Migration that leverage the Meraki API to streamline this process, allowing for easier migration of devices and configurations without significant downtime59.

In summary, while you cannot move non-MX devices directly using the API, you can automate parts of the process by backing up configurations and reapplying them after manual relocation.

Incase if you need more details or want our support you are welcome.

You could consider buying a product like Boundless Digital's for this job.  They have a lot of support for network migrations.
