What is the difference between the two meraki licenses?

MERAKI-SUB LIC-MX-XL-E LIC-MX-SE

What is the difference between the above licenses and the ENT license functions? Can Meraki routers use router functions without a license? Or, what are the consequences of not having a license?

Hi,

Below is the difference Between Licenses:
LIC-MX-XL-E = Enterprise License
Basic features like firewall, VPN, SD-WAN, traffic shaping.

LIC-MX-SE = Advanced Security License
Includes everything in Enterprise plus extra security:
– Malware protection (AMP)
– Intrusion detection (IDS/IPS)
– Advanced content filtering
– Geo-IP blocking

 Without a License:
Meraki device won’t work after 30-day grace period

You can’t access the dashboard or manage the device

No support or updates

Negative.  The "-E" licence includes everything on that list (specifically it includes AMP, IDS, content filtering and geo-IP blocking).

You can find a comparison of Essentials and Advantage here:

Hi, let me ask in a different way. Meraki has two types of LICs, Cisco Networking Subscription (LIC-MX-L-E, LIC-MX-L-A) and Meraki Classic Licensing (Enterprise Classic license, Advanced Security Classic License). What is the difference between the former and the latter?

In a Meraki Subscribtion the devices (in your case the MX's) are divided into product classes (MX small, MX medium, MX large...)

https://documentation.meraki.com/General_Administration/Licensing/Subscription_-_MX_Licensing

In subscribtions you can either have Essential or Advantage which is also described in this document (E and the A in the sku)

You always need a license for Meraki device.

You have made a typo.  The two licences you are referring to are:

  • LIC-MX-XL-E
  • LIC-MX-S-E

You can read about the differences here:

https://documentation.meraki.com/General_Administration/Licensing/Subscription_-_MX_Licensing

These are both subscription licences.

"S" is for all MX6x class devices, and VMX-S.

"XL" is for the MX250, MX450, MX650 and VMX-L.

The "E" on the end means it is an essentials licence.  This is what 99% of customers will use.
