MG51 and MX84 Configuration - Need Clarification

Hi everyone,

i need to set up a new network where an MG51 will provide connectivity to an MX84, followed by MS switches and MR access points.

I'm trying to figure out how to properly configure the MG51 and the WAN1 port on the MX84. Typically, I use a /30 public IP address from an ISP to connect the MX to the provider, but in this case, how should I configure them?

  • Should the MG51 be set to routed mode?
  • Should I assign a public IP to the MX WAN port?
  •

Can anyone clarify the best approach for this setup?

Thanks!

If you just have one mx i would use this.

https://documentation.meraki.com/MG/General_Configuration/MG_IP_Passthrough

This way you dont have double nat and it would be easier to active a service like client vpn.

If you just provide basic internet or have a warm spare setup nat mode on mg would works fine to.

They normally ship in routed mode, with DHCP server enabled.

So if you configure nothing and just plug it all in - it will work.

Set the MG51 to routed mode to act as a gateway to the ISP. Assign a public IP from the ISP to the MX84 WAN1 port. The MX84 handles internal routing, while the MG51 manages the ISP connection and public IP.
