Hi all, I just wanted to get feedback on an idea. I have 2 MX95 firewalls (one cold standby), and a MG21E backup gateway in our office. We are moving office over the next 2-3 weeks. To get internet up and running quickly in the new office when we are still in the current office, I was considering if I can just take our MG21E and bring it to the new office. Then plug a basic home Wi-Fi / router into the gateway. This would provide some Wi-Fi internet in the new office for a few weeks until we get wired broadband services up and running. How would the MG21E react if it lost connection to the MX95 where it is currently connected to WAN2? Would the MG21E let me put a network cable from its LAN port to the 'uplink' port on a home wifi box? Would it need a cross over cable?

Hi Philip, no reason to use 'warm spare'. I have been on the lookout for a way to have some redundancy on the network patches that didn't involve physically moving cables, warm spare sounded like what i was looking for. My background is in other infrastructure, not so much with switches etc. As i understand, a stack of 2 switches means it operates as one switch. Does this mean the ports are controlled by either of the switches? Can one switch die and all the ports on both switches are still running and controlled by the other switch in the stack? What Im looking for is automatic failover in some manner. If a switch fails i want another switch (or something) to take over and continue running the network for the devices connected to the failed switch. Is that possible? Im trying to have no physical actions like cable moving, all automatic.

Yes, I have servers set up with teaming currently across 2 switches. Current set up is 2 Cisco CBS 350 48 port switches with 4 ports LAG to link them both. All devices can fit on one switch if needed, but currently distributed across the 2 switches. Failure recovery is just to physically move the endpoint network cables to ports on the other switch. Its a pity that there is no real fail over option for switches, a second switch to somehow take over the traffic on a port on another switch if its board, or power failed.

Thanks, I had looked at that article. The 'spare' feature seems to be just configuration that would transfer to another switch. I wish they would invent some way to share the ports to other switches for physical failover of the endpoints !

Hi, I am considering purchasing 2 Meraki MS350-48-FP switches with the plan to use the warm spare feature. I will have around 30 devices in a small office connected to one switch. Around 20 connections will be poe cisco phones that use the pass through ethernet on the phone to connect laptops / pcs on user's desks. Other devices will be a few printers, MR wifi APs, Logitech rally bar and tap controller VC equipment. I haven't yet read any info on whether i actually still need to move the network cables for the devices from the primary to the spare switch in event of a complete failure of the primary. Or are the ports on the failed primary still operational and powered by the warm spare? If I don't need to move any network cables from the failed primary, does the warm spare take over powering any poe devices, ie the phones, that are connected to the ports on the failed primary? This is probably a silly question, but I can't find any instructions on how to get out of safe mode once it is enabled. I don't want to do a factory reset. Can anyone tell me how I exit safe mode on this device? During set up it wasnt connecting to the ISP via the data sim. i am in the process of getting the correct APN details from the ISP. I logged into the local admin portal of the device. It wasnt connecting to the Meraki portal as the cellular connection wasnt working. I put it in safe mode and it has connected to the cloud ok now. But I can't login to the local admin portal now. I have tried the default username of the serial and blank password that i used first of all, but it just refreshes the login box. no error or any message. I am hoping to get the instructions on how to exit safe mode first of all, then i will try and see why i can't login any more with the default serial number as user.

Hi Alemabrahao, thanks for the quick reply. I dont think we will be publishing any services in the near future. But I have tried to get Teams integration to our Yeastar PBX to work, without success so far. I had applied the port forwarding rules required, but the service was unable to reach the pbx from the internet. It could well be the ISP configuration causing a problem. Thanks.

Hi all, My ISP only gives a single port on their comms box for internet access. I currently have one uplink port connected to it on my MX95 and pppoe enabled. I have just bought a second MX95 to set up as a warm spare. To enable both to have internet access I have a small switch to connect them to and then patch one port to the internet port on the ISP box. To allow multiple devices the ISP says they can turn off pppoe and revert to dhcp. They change their box config to give a private network 192.168.70.0/24 for me to use on the small switch. So i will have the uplink ports from both MX95s connected to the small switch and they will have an ip address in the 192.168.70.0/24 range. Internally in the office i use 10.0.0.0/24 network. The ISP says on the coms box they nat a public IP to the IPs in the 192 network. So the outside of the MX firewalls will be on 192 network and receive traffic natted from a public IP. Before I go ahead with requesting the changes from the ISP, I was wondering if anyone had seen this before and could advise if it will cause a problem for the MX? Thanks, Nick.
