Apple Wi-Fi Sharing - How to effectively prevent it?

by SteveWeidner in Wireless LAN

I'm working with a school district where primarily Apple devices are used.  As a result of using iPads and MacBooks at school, staff and students tend to have iPhones as their personal devices.   There is no BYOD network for students, they are allowed to use only school-owned devices which are governed by policies to maintain CIPA compliance.  Anyone reading this knows however, that end-users want to use their own devices for social media, games, etc. so it is virtually impossible to entirely prevent students from using their phones.  Staff are allowed to use their personal phones on the Staff SSID, but that network is not CIPA compliant so no students are to be using that SSID.  However...   Because of this iOS feature (https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT209368), the Staff credentials have been shared.  Eventually it got to a student device resulting in students connecting to  the Staff SSID  and sharing it with their friends.  To summarize the page linked, once an Apple device has a Wi-Fi connection set up, that device can share Wi-Fi credentials with another device, as long as 1) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are enabled on both devices, 2) the device owner permits it (tapping "Share Password" on screen), and 3) the new-person is in the first user's contact list.   We would love to be able to disable this "Wi-Fi password sharing" feature on school and staff-owned devices, but Apple does not provide that option.   We believe that creating a new hidden SSID with a new PSK may stop this behavior, and are preparing to test the theory. Our logic is, if new-person's device can't see the SSID, it won't try to associate, if it can't associate, the Apple "feature" won't reach out to nearby devices looking for credentials.   Has anyone in the Community 'tackled' this scenario before and if so, what was your solution?   Thanks! ... There are so many great troubleshooting tools in the Meraki Dashboard. I'm anxiously awaiting firmware to overcome some "known issues" on the MS390 series.  I hadn't realized how dependent I am on the ability to see CDP/LLDP information and really miss it on these new switches. ... View more

We are looking for a radio station. Switch Eddie's geographic location (address). Broadcasting House, Peel Wing, Portland Pl, London W1A 1AA, United Kingdom   We are looking for a date. Have a look at VLAN 1525 in the MX. It'll provide hints. "Towel Day" - 25 May   We're looking for a well known attack used by hackers. A hint can be found in the raspberrypi client's notes. phishing   We're looking for a motto, and even a rule. Don't ... SSID 15's name says the rest. Don't Panic!    This question can be found on the splash page settings for the same SSID. 42 - "What is the answer to..."   We're looking for one of my favorite characters. The Total Perspective Vortex MV camera's tags are all hints. Marvin the Paranoid Android   We're looking for some kind of big calculator. Port 6 on switch Eddie links up to it. Deep Thought   We're looking for the artist of a song. You'll need to use the snapshot API to know which one. Make a snapshot of the Total Perspective Vortex camera. I shone some light at the exact timestamp of 18/08/2020 16:12:00 Belgian time (Note that Belgian time is at +02:00 at the moment). If your timestamp is correct, you'll see the title of a song that's also the name of a spaceship, if not you'll see only darkness. Neil Young (Heart of Gold)   Who is informed when someone violates their geofencing policy? arthur.dent@human.from.earth   By now the central theme of the questions should be clear. But the next question isn’t: oaniemmsbuhpvzkbzptgsilyzskjoticnmk? It's Vigenère encoded, the keyword for deciphering it can be found in a pointless MX L3 firewall rule. Douglas Adams   ... View more

In the MS product line, you would need an MS425-32 if you want to provide 10GE connectivity to that number of clients.  Unfortunately, that model will be nowhere near your $3,000 price point.    I am not aware of a competing product that would fit both the performance and budget requirements you've mentioned. ... What I would like to see, and have confirmed is not available in the Dashboard, is the ability to show one or more de-warped "views" on the Video Wall.  The virtual Pan-Tilt-Zoom is great, but if someone is monitoring a set of cameras, a human-friendly view(s) would be very useful.    For example: At a hallway intersection we install an MV32.  Manually, we can select the camera and look down each hallway (North, South, East, West) with the usual motion search features, etc.  On the Video Wall however, the camera looks like a sphere.  My preference would be to select, from the Virtual PTZ view, a "scene" for each hallway that could then be added to the Video Wall. ... I know this wasn't asked, but in case this is useful to future readers..   When bringing them back online, it is good to power up your MX as soon as it is racked and connected to the ISP.  Connect and power up the MS250 next and you will have everything (the rest of the building) back online except devices connected directly to this rack. It also provides, should you need it, connectivity from your laptop to the dashboard.   In regard to the stack, power on sequence should not matter. As a personal preference, I bring them up "top to bottom" as seen in the rack.  Typically, as each one is being cabled, I will have it booting up so I can watch the boot sequence lights and know it is communicating with the dashboard. By the time the last patch cable is connected, the dashboard should be all green again.   #ProTip Spread your AP and MV connections among your switches to minimize impact of a single switch going down. For example, ports 1-6 of each switch in a stack or closet would be dedicated to wireless and/or surveillance. ... View more
