SOLVED! Because the other device that I have in my network had always connected properly to its phone app whether or not WiFi was turned-on as long as cellular was on and vice-versa, I refused to consider outside-my-normal pattern of thinking that things ought to work if I simply add port-forwarding to the raspberry pi in an analogous manner. But adding the pi seemed to "break" that internal routing from apps-inside-network to devices (including pi) in network. I finally broke down and captured packets and analyzed with wireshark. I'm pretty rusty with that tool, but what I discovered looked like a double-nat issue (My MX is in a DMZ on a google fiber box). Hence, I added port forwarding (in addition to the DMZ), and now all is well! I do admit that I am still baffled why it worked for the other device in my network - it has for years! But I am happy that all is working, and I apologize for not having done more diligence (wireshark) before posting in the first place. An ever-exuberant Meraki fan! -Mike

I went to run an errand and came back after about and hour-and-half, and COULD connect to the raspberry pi again via cellular like yesterday. Hence, it simply took longer after reboot than the other device. Quite a bit longer, though not likely that entire houf-and-half. Hence, I'm back to a stable, albeit not ideal point: I can connect to my devices inside my network by turning off WiFi on my phone, and using cellular. I provide my dynamic dns name to the phone apps and they resolve successfully and connect to the internal devices - the port forwardiing works. If I turn on WiFi, too, doing exactly the same fails.

I rebooted ALL of my networking equipment today (power off and on, in fact). Now I can no longer connect to the rasperry pi via the app even with WiFi turned off and cellular on, like I could yesterday. I have to connect specifically to the local IP address of pi on the local wifi. However, oddly enough, the other device in my network that I have ports forwarded to *IS* still working, but only via its iphone app when connected via cellular and WiFi off (same as yesterday.) It's as if the port forwarding is flakey, but that doesn't make much sense. I did update the MX65 firmware just in the last few days, but I have doubts that would have caused a problem...

Excellent thought, and - yes - I am using an MR32, but all SSIDs are allowed to access local LAN.

Some more information from investigations. I do NOT think it has to do with cellular, WiFi, as I just did another test, this time with a virtual machine running in the LAN that has a different app that connects to a different internal server. It experiences the same behavior. Hence, it is almost as if these apps - though they specify the WAN IP (or FQDN) as their destination, are "smart enough" to know that they are both within the same LAN, but then get confused as to what port to connect to and therefore don't.

I am baffled! I have the Blynk iOS app installed on my iPhone and am connecting to a local Blynk server on a raspberry pi in my network. If I turn off WiFi, it works perfectly (via cellular): The Blynk app can connect to the Blynk Server. If I turn on WiFi it cannot connect! I'm completely baffled! I even turned off all firewall rules temporarily and have the same results! Port forwarding is obviously working as expected, because I CAN connect as expected when WiFi is OFF but cellular is on (and I can use an external port scanner to see that I can "turn-on/off" ports via the forwarding as expected. But once WiFi is on (whether or not I have Cellular data on/off), it does NOT work. ? Help, please, thanks! -Mike

Yes, as a matter of fact. I'm running MR25.13 and MX13.36, but what I see is:

Please excuse the odd question, but I have actually done quite a bit of googling and searching on this site without finding my own answer. It the heatmap feature gone or has it been moved, and -if so- where? Your assistance will be appreciated! -Mike

During this holiday break, I was able to move my MR32 to a central location and turn off the MX65W SSIDs. The MR32 appears to not have quite the range of the MX65W, but is close and is working better in the sense that it has a richer feature set. (This seems to make great sense to me: A small business might use one MX65W to cover the entire store and therefore not need multiple APs, hence, a greater range on the MX65W is perfect. An MR32 might be more likely to be used with additional APs and therefore need the additional features that include seamless roaming and meshing, etc.) One thing that I am still puzzled about that I wonder if I've made some mistake on, but haven't figure out yet: When I use the WIreless Diagnostics on my MacBook Pro, and do a scan, I see that there are two wireless networks coming from the Merakis (either the MR32 or MX65W) (with no network names, but BSSID's that indicate that the Security is WEP)! What might those be? Are those the 3rd radios used for rogue AP protection? Are they okay that they are WEP?

Thank you Dashboard_DJ! I will move that MR to the central location near my MX65W. I had purchased the MX65W with the idea that it could do everything - wireless AND especially security and it CAN and does both SO VERY well. Its just that I had one small area in a far corner that was not getting covered. Hence, I purchased the MR32 and put that there. This solution works FANTASTIC, but - as you'll note above, I decided I wanted authenticate access now, and that's were I was running into the problems. Because my original mindset was to keep the MX65W as my "master" and the MR32 was just a satellite (so-to-speak), I didn't (as I noted above) previously consider that the MR32 might replace the wireless of the MX65W completely, as I can imagine that the dedicated AP circuitry and antennas in that unit are likely beefier than what's in the MX65W. Hence, I will try that this upcoming weekend or next. It is also obvious that in dashboard, there are far more options for wireless optimizations and configurations for the MR32 than the MX65W. Let me say, however, that for smaller spaces, the MX65W works exceptionally well and could easily stand-alone! Again, thanks!

My dashboard does show "Use Meraki Authentication" when "WPA Enterprise" is selected for the Security setting. What I may do, instead, is move my MR32 to a more central location, and then turn off the wireless of the MX65W and just rely on the MR32. I had purchased the MR32 to cover a dead spot with great success, but I had not until now wondered if the MR32 has better range than the MX65W and could take the place of its wireless. Thank you for your response! I absolutely love the Meraki equipment and dashboard! -Mike

Is it possible to use Meraki authentication for a SSID hosted by an MX65W if one also has an MR32? I find that I can select Meraki authentication for that SSID on the MX65W, but when I go to the Users configuration for my network, only SSIDs hosted by the MR32 are present for which I may add users. Meraki has warned me that a mixed wireless network with an MX65W and MR32 is not optimal (because roaming and meshing will not work) but since I have completely different SSIDs hosted by each, everything has worked very well so far. However, I'd now like authentication for one of the SSIDs host by the MX65W.
