WiFi 7 Licensing Question
It seems there is a change in the licensing for the WiFi7 models. I've read through the documents on Cisco's website, but I still have questions. Specifically, I'm looking to get model CW9176I APs, and plan to only use them in the Meraki Dashboard (not on-prem WLC). It seems there is a new "Unified" license for these APs - namely LIC-CW-E and LIC-CW-A. The Cisco ordering guide indicates one of those is needed. However, my Meraki reseller is saying the old LIC-ENT-1YR will work fine for these new models, and I'm questioning if they have up-to-date info.
Can someone clear this up for me?

IF you are on per device yes you need LIC-ENT licenses. If you are replacing existing APs you do not need new licenses, you can reuse the existing licenses. You only need new licenses for net new additions.
I would suggest talking to your partner/Meraki rep about being on PDL and the process to move to subscription. It's a little tricky as you can only do it when fully expired but PDL is deprecated so it's something to think about. If you happen to qualify for an Enterprise Agreement Subscription it's a little easier but you must talk to your reps about that.

LIC-CW-E and LIC-CW-A This new licenses are designed to provide a more streamlined and flexible approach to managing Cisco's WiFi7 models. They are intended to cover both on-premises and cloud-managed deployments, including Meraki Dashboard.
LIC-ENT-1YR This license has traditionally been used for Meraki devices.
The new unified licenses, the LIC-CW-E or LIC-CW-A would be the recommended option for the CW9176I APs.

Thanks for the quick reply. Do you know if the LIC-ENT-1YR will still function with the new APs in dashboard only mode?

It is recommended to use LIC-CW-E or LIC-CW-A for full functionality and support.

If you already use Meraki you need to continue to use the licensing model you have until it expires. If you are brand new I would start with subscription using the new options, but you could do co-term and there are some benefits to continuing to use Co-Term as far as options if your business is one that regularly spins off sites. Subscriptions do not easily allow for license transfers or subtraction outside of the renewal period.

Thank you for that information. I currently have a Meraki deployment, but the license model is per device (not co-term). The quote I have in front of me is for CW9176I and LIC-ENT-1YR (one per AP). Nowhere in any official doc do I see that's supported. The official docs all list LIC-CW for that hardware model. I'm sure the reseller will stand behind it if it's wrong, but I'd rather not have the hassle. Can you say for certain LIC-ENT will work with this model?
