WIFI 6E AND 7 DEVICE compatibility

Hello Community,

Our customer is planning to migrate their wireless environment to Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7.

Before proceeding, we would like to check whether there are any known end-device compatibility issues when using Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7.

For example, are there any specific client vendors or device types that commonly experience compatibility issues with these technologies?

Any references to official documentation or known issues would also be greatly appreciated.

Best regards.

  - @abcdef12345   Those standards are backward compatible, clients
should not be impacted, and use the enhanced
                                   features when possible.

  - @abcdef12345   No ,  that's not true when a new standard is backward compatible. Some vendors may publish wi-fi 7 verification info's concerning their products but that is only informational

You will likely find some issues with older devices and unless you enable WPA3, you will effectively be using WiFi6 mode anyway.  It is WPA3 that I have found issues with, even roaming issues for Samsung phones etc. (S22U)

It is getting better, but many old, in particular IoT, devices don't support it and WPA transition mode has had many issues for me.  Even WPA3 native mode has also been less stable than WPA2 mode in my testing.

Based on my experience with newer devices, I still see some issues related to WPA3, so I wouldn't consider adopting Wi-Fi 6e or 7 at this time.

I am not a Cisco Meraki employee. My suggestions are based on documentation of Meraki best practices and day-to-day experience.

Please, if this post was useful, leave your kudos and mark it as solved.

Compatibility is poor, especially IoT devices.  You will find many devices that can not connect at all, or that can not maintain a stable connection.

Do not attempt to change an existing SSID.

Instead, create a brand new SSID, and migrate only those clients across that work.
