Access points high latency

We have several CW9162 and CW9163 access points and we encountered unexpected high latency issue .Can you help us to know how to trouble shooting this issue ?

Many APs encounted this issue ,sometimes it will be ok after i rebooted it. The latency to the uplink switch is ok.

What do Wireless Health and Wireless Overview say?

In the document I linked to, there are also several courses to train you on resolving these kinds of issues.

The AP treats ICMP responses as a low priority, is there a possibility that the AP is busy at these times and concentrating on processing user traffic, or is that also degenerating over time?

I am not a Cisco Meraki employee. My suggestions are based on documentation of Meraki best practices and day-to-day experience.

It can be challenging to diagnose latency issues and I would highly recommend building up a holistic overview by answering some questions about the issue. For example:

- How many wireless clients are observing the high latency?

- Is the latency observed at a specific time of day?

- Is it affecting specific SSIDs or all SSIDs?

- When did this behaviour first begin to occur?

- Is the network running the most up-to-date firmware version?

- What does the overall wireless environment look like (verified with a site survey)?

etc.

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but it does give an idea on the kinds of questions that can really help to scope out the issue, and these are the kinds of questions that would be brought up in a Meraki Support ticket.

Are you pinging the access point from a wired or wireless device?

Hey @EricZ 👋🏻

If you haven't already, I'd recommend upgrading to MR 31.1.7.1. If you're still facing issues, please reach out to our Support team so we can troubleshoot this.

Cheers,

When you are pinging the AP's from your infrastructure you are not testing client experience but rather the management plane connection speed between the AP and your monitoring system.  As @cmr has mentioned, the AP could be busy and be a little slow to respond to ICMP echoes.

Things you should be monitoring are the following:
Channel airtime
AP CPU and RAM
Client RSSI/SNR
Average client onboarding experience
Average client frame latency and drops.

Channel airtime can be viewed from dashboard and is maybe available via the API, not sure.
Onboarding expierence can be vewed per AP or per client.

RSSI/SNR can be viewed in client view or by going to the AP and viewing the currently connected clients.
Average frame latency and drops can be viewed from the RF spectrum page.

You can also have thousandeyes integration with your managed clients to see their wireless experience over time.
