MX64 able to use for DHCP IP protocol? or must be Static IP protocol?

What are the advantage and disadvantages for DCHP and Static IP protocol?

For deployment Cisco Meraki MX64 Firewall at small office.

Please assist me to answer those question. Thanks for assist.

You can use both DHCP or Static addressing

DHCP - easier to assign addresses because its not manual its automatic

Static- if you have a small network and want granular control you can statically assign addresses

But DHCP need any special configuration?
I hear some people mention once restart will need to re-configure?

Just a home network, small area with 2 desktop.

The DHCP assignment wont break your network, the DHCP lease period dictates when the IP addresses change

So when the IP's change, everything should still work

If your devices are plugging directly to the mx ports
under dhcp setting you have the option to run the specific subnet as DHCP or tell the MX not to respond to DHCP request and assign them statically on your devices, in my case my subnet is 192.168.8.0/24

But everytime my network engineer request static IP when we doing deployment. I abit unsure.

then you can give him a static address in the range/vlan he needs.

so if you MX is 192.168.8.1 and your first pc is 192.168.8.2 and your printer is 192.168.8.3 these should all work fine.

Then if you need to add another device on the network, you give them an address in the same subnet e.g 192.168.8.4

otherwise keep the address assignment to dhcp, and they will get assigned an address automatically

and what is he asking the static address for? for  new device on the same network?

does he want to create a site-to-site vpn?

he might be looking for your public address, which might be static or dynamic depending on your ISP.

For Meraki now, no need to have Static IP as a must.

Able to use DHCP IP and it’s easier to use DHCP IP to deploy.

But for Business use Static IP will be better as it more feasible.

Based on your experience, using DHCP and Static IP got any different feature?

so from what i can gather from below, the dhcp is working

and it is changing every day as the lease time is set to 1 day.

So if you want to give a machine a static ip, you would give them an ip address in the 192.168.1.0/24 range

give a machine a static ip is for more stable if not wrong, still will using DHCP for internal.

Are you referring to the WAN interface(s)? Of course you can use DHCP (default) or static IP address.
