MX Spare licensing

Hi, we have a customer who want to buy 5 MX65 devices for differents sites, as the parts replacement is 8x5 (and they don't want to pay the 24x7 support) they want an extra device as a spare, (not to be connected to any MX65 in HA) only in case of failure of one of the other 5 devices.

The question is, Does the spare MX65 need a license in this case? or as in HA the spare does not requiere a license?

Nope, a spare would not require a license. You only need licenses for what's active in the dashboard at any given moment in time.

Ok, but if one of the other (licensed) devices fails and I want to put the spare, it needs a separate license or it can "borrow" the one from the device that failed?

Licenses are not tied to devices, they are tied to Organizations. As long as you have enough licenses in an org to cover all of the devices in that org you are fine.

You can't use an MX64 license on an MX100.... But as long as you have 5 MX64 licenses and 5 MX64 appliances you are good.

We keep a spare switch and MX on hand to avoid downtime waiting for the RMA device (even though Meraki is very fast).  If it is the same model as what you are replacing then you don't need a license.  If it isn't then you get 30 days before you have to get a license so it'll still work fine as a spare until you get your RMA device.

Just a note if this is a cold spare - don't add it to inventory until you need it.  Otherwise if you have 6 devices with 5 licences you will start getting licence violation warnings.
