MX-75 port Internet3, WAN2 physically not functioning

Hi everyone, 

We have 2 Internet connection from different providers. Both are perfectly functional when connected to port internet2, WAN1. It is our understanding that port internet3, WAN2 should automatically be available when a cable is connected to it. WAN1 and WAN2 are correctly configured. Even with our best efforts, WAN2 port internet3 is physically dead. Are we missing something?

For the MX appliance where you are attempting to utilize WAN3 as a Backup Uplink, are you able to confirm the firmware is on 18.2 or greater? 

In order for the MultiWAN Backup Uplink feature to function as expected it does require the appliance be on firmware 18.2 or higher.

Our firmware is MX-18.211.2. In our case, we use Internet2 as WAN1 and Internet3 as WAN2

The doc of the Multiwan backup Link is confusing us as it seems to contradict the following documentation:

This is correct.  You should not have "WAN on port 3" enabled.  That is only used when you are using three Internet circuits.

Correct, you will notice that the MultiWAN backup document does talks about those pairs you've brought up here. MultiWAN backup uplink is a newer feature as well and is designed for having 3 WAN connections.

Thank you for your answers, if I understand correctly, we can only "Enable Backup WAN on port 3" if we have three internet circuits? In our case, we have two internet circuits from different internet providers. how can we configure it? Thank you for your time

You need to enable the backup port on the mx dashboard uplink page

By physically, do you mean there is no link light whatsoever? Have you performed a loopback test by plugging a cable into that port and another MX port (If this fails its just a bad port unless disabled)? Can you ensure the port isn't logically disabled by checking the local status page?

Yes, there is no light whatsoever, we did not try the loopback, but the local status page indicates it is enabled.

Hi Vlad.  Ports 3 and 4 (the copper WAN ports) are only checked for WAN ports at power on.

So if you power on the MX and then plug in the ports - they won't work.  You'll need to power cycle the MX75 to get them going.
