Inter vlan routing and static vs dhcp

Hi, I have a strange issue.

MX85 as a security appliance, also provides dhcp on a few vlans.

my main laptop on vlan 1 can generally see devices on other vlans.

I’ve plugged a smart device into a switch port that has a pvid of vlan 2.

if the device is set to DHCP I can see the webpage of the device from my laptop on vlan 1 without issue.

if I set the device to a static ip with exactly the same address, subnet, gateway, dns - I can PING the device from the laptop, but can’t access the devices webpage at the same address.

any ideas?

hello,

Is the MX the DHCP server for vlan 2 as well? What kind of switch are you using? Any other devices performing layer 3 in the environment besides the MX? What if you plug the smart device straight into the MX and bypass the switch?

Yes, it’s running dhcp for all vlans.

they’re Engenius Switches, but no layer 3 functions.

not on site for a few weeks, so can’t do any physical changes to test.

Why don't you just make a DHCP reservation for this device instead of setting a static IP?

That’s fine but I’d like to understand where the problem lies.

Are you sure you have configured the correct Gateway?
