How is 'connectivity' monitored/reported

I would like to understand how connectivity is monitored in 'Security & SD-WAN > Monitor > Appliance Status'

Is the MX probed from the outside > in (ie from a Meraki datacentre to the MX)?

Or is the MX probing from the inside > out (ie from itself to a Meraki datacentre) then reporting its connectivity?

This is our MX64 connectivity graph for a typical day at a serviced office in China. If the monitoring is outside > in, then I wonder how accurate this graph could be as we know this device is behind one or more firewall/router/nat devices (and in China!)

An easy way to test would be to setup separate monitoring running from a device inside our network, but before I do that I would like to know the answer to my question.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

I understand connectivity is monitored "inside > out" between the Device and Meraki dashboard.

Thanks. After reading the articles, I think you are right

As the device runs on the network, it will communicate device and network usage analytics back to the Meraki Cloud. Dashboard analytics based on this information, in the form of graphs and charts, are updated regularly in Meraki’s Cloud, and are displayed in the dashboard of users when they are viewing this information.
