Client VPN connected but can't do anything on LAN

MX67 shows VPN is connected, but I cannot do anything on LAN.
I can ping devices on LAN by IP address.   ping -a "IP" returns the proper device name
I can ping devices on LAN by name, but the reply IP address is my ISP, and not the device it should be.
My PPP connection does not have a default gateway address. Is this normal?
Any Ideas?

DNS server forward lookup (host or cname) is pointing to a public IP, DNS reverse lookup (pointer) is pointing to a private IP.

What DNS server is the device using and can you see the entries there to confirm?
